If you're entertaining the notion of taking up throwing knives, it's important that you focus on the basics first. Throwing knives is an art form that requires a lot of respect and diligence. One must always keep in mind that the hobby requires skills that drawn on precision, concentration, and fine motor coordination. Furthermore, knife throwing shouldn't be done if you don't have knives geared for throwing or you'd run the risk incurring physical damages on property, on other people, and yourself.
A throwing knife is usually made up of a single steel without handles. It has two parts - the blade and the grip, with the blade part being the sharp end and the grip part serving as the dull end. Depending on preference, one can hold the knife before throwing by either the grip end or the blade end. The grip is meant for safe handling and the blade is the end that should strike the target.
Types of Throwing Knives
The two types of throwing knives are balanced knives and unbalanced knives.
The balanced throwing knife's center of gravity is right at the middle. Many prefer balanced throwing knives because of its emphasis on symmetry as far as the stance and the throwing go. If thrown the right way, the balanced throwing knife's trajectory is uniformly circular.
Unbalanced throwing knives, on the other hand, have one end that is much heavier than the other. The grip end is usually the heavier end. Some prefer the unbalanced throwing knife for the spin involved during the throw. This type of throwing knife is preferred by the most experienced throwers and is not recommended for beginners.
At this point, it is advised by many that you start with a balanced throwing knife. The preferred blade length is from 12 inches to 16 inches. It's not too heavy nor too light, making it easier for the beginner to balance the blade in the throwing hand. This size should also be heavy enough to produce the very satisfying 'thunk' every time the knife hits the target.
Fundamentals of Knife Throwing
Once you've purchased the throwing knife of your choice, it's time to brush up on the basics.
1. The Grip
The most recommended grip for beginners is the Hammer Grip, wherein you hold the grip end of the knife like a hammer and place your thumb along its edge.
2. The Stance
If you're right-handed, place your left foot two feet in front of the right one. Your weight should rest on the ball of your right foot. Both feet should be 45 degrees apart with the left foot pointing towards the target. Bend the knees slightly and make sure that arms are in a straight line towards the target.
3. The Throw
Hold the knife in a firm grip and without moving your shoulders, swing your arm upwards in a perfect vertical until it reaches the size of your head. Swing downward in a chopping motion and release the throwing knife as soon as it's pointed towards the target. Don't stop the downward motion even after releasing the knife for the follow-through. This helps maintain the proper trajectory of the knife as it leaves your hand.
Now that you're knowledgeable of the fundamentals in knife throwing, it's time for you to purchase the throwing knives that are right for you. Throwing knives, if you pick the right store, offer a lot of varieties. Practice regularly and soon you'll surprise yourself as you throw knives with stunning precision.
