How Telling Stories From The Stage Saves Lives - Part 1

Many speakers have honed in on telling stories from the stage. However, I have faith that many you will find two kinds of tales which are told from the stage. The first is effective and the other . . . just plain sucks. Within this 3 Part Series, I will be discussing the 3 components which will perhaps have you effectively share your stories and alter lives any moment you speak on the stage.

We begin by using speakers who're telling stories that aren't effective. Did you ever hear a speaker tell the storyline of another person? Have you ever heard a speaker tell very "surface" tales? Have you ever heard speakers tell the dreaded "Life is Outstanding" "Think positive" "The Sun will come out tomorrow" kind of speech?

I do not know what you think but individuals delivering this kind of speeches plain SUCK! It doesn't only suck, but speakers are ultimately carrying out an injustice to those who are listening. What's even more frightening may be the inescapable fact that audiences have grown to be so familiar with this kind of speaker that has them stereotype speakers period.

Now if this involves telling stories which are very effective, I've discovered that you will find three primary components when done properly, you won't just be telling a story, you'll be telling it in ways that may literally change someone's life.

Component #1 to telling stories from the stage that may changes lives is the story Must Be PERSONAL! Among the traps to being a speaker is that we're brought to think that people must uphold this "perfect image" on the stage. Yes we're wearing the suits and ties and seen as the expert so obviously it might seem sensible to be altogether and tell the very best stories right? WRONG! That may be the death of the speaker. A speaker needs to realize that he's already seen like a celebrity. Almost untouchable. If a speaker really wants to make any difference, he really wants to be as relatable as humanly possible because strike #1 right from the start is "oh well he/she made it happen, I won't have the ability to."

One thing that I'm constantly told through my clients is that they are amazed because when telling stories which were personal, it influenced their audience a lot. Point in fact, this is a testimonial from one of my clients, the Louisiana HOSA Association Executive Director needed to say this:

"As they listened, I could see that they could truly relate to you. As you told your own personal story, many actually shed tears. I have since heard that some students were truly affected and you made a difference in their lives. Thank you. We sometimes forget that our young people need to hear from other regular people, who were once just like them, and then became a success. They needed you, and you delivered."

After I read this I was in tears. But here's the one thing fellow speakers, I receive letters such as this often. That does not mean this to toot my horn or perhaps be boastful, however, this to let you know that if you share your personal story, the audience will be more apt to let you in.

I remember I was speaking at a Freshmen Orientation, and if you have ever spoke for a High School audience they are the most REAL audience members. If they like you, they will show it. If they don't like you, THEY WILL SHOW IT.

So here I am speaking at this Freshman orientation and let's just say the audience was not "feeling me." It was tough and it got to a point where they were talking over me and I finally said "you know guys, I understand you are not feeling me but let me tell you why I am here." At that time I began to share how being raised by my Mom and my Dad not being around impacted my life. I was in the mode of "to hell with it I'm just gonna put it all out there on the table." Ten minutes later, you could hear a pin drop in a 2,000 seat auditorium.

They were hooked! I realized that I had hit the jackpot of my career. I discovered telling stories not only from the heart, but also authentically, people open up in a whole new way and they allow your story to bring out their story. When their story comes up, that is the 1st step to lives being changed.

Alright, that is Component #1 to telling stories that will change lives. In the next article I will be sharing with you how telling the authentic story can be either boring or vivid.
