For all those who wish to make a place of their own in the website industry, let me tell you that you are not too late. Far from being saturated, the world of web is ever growing with more and more competition but always room for one more. Let's face it, the web is where the world of tomorrow is going to be. There are a few methods to have a website of your own. The reason for this article is to show the ease with which one can be browsing their own website, within a days' time. Let us first look at how to go about the whole process in simple steps.

Register a domain name
A domain name is going to be unique to your website's content. Make sure you choose a good domain name, which says something about your website. A visitor, while browsing the search engines, should be able to understand what your website is about by reading your domain name. e.g. if you choose a domain name markspowertools dot com, it would mean the website is more about power tools and the owner is probably a person by the name of Mark. There is no point in putting that same name whereas the website is about horticulture. You will have more targeted traffic if you choose your name right.
Now there are lot of websites that offer domain name registration services. Godaddy, hostgator, ipage, fatcow, hub etc are the many companies that help with a domain name registration. Once you are done registering a domain, you need to move on to the next step to have a website of your own, i.e. choosing a hosting company.

I would recommend to host your website with the same company from which you have bought your domain name. If you have registered your domain name with godaddy, the process of getting your website online is faster if you stick with godaddy as your hosting company. If you choose otherwise, there is of course the option of pointing your domain name to the host company. Build a website
Now comes the difficult bit in getting an online presence of your own. I say difficult, because I am assuming that you are not a professional website designer yourself if you are reading through this article. If you are, I do apologize for the assumption. For those of you who are not IT savvy, there are various methods to go about building your own website. If it is a single page, static website that you are looking for, some of the hosting companies offer free drag and drop website builder options you can use to create your very own web page. If you were looking for something more dynamic, you might also want to try using the content management systems, which most of the hosting companies have like wordpress, joomla, drupal etc.
There is still a bit of a drawback to using the CMS systems around. They look quite standard and are not very SEO friendly. In case you have a design of your website in mind and you want to see it on your computer just the way you imagined it, I would recommend using a professional web design service to get the job done. The search engine spiders, find it easier to crawl an html website than a joomla based blog. I do admit, the cost of having a professional build the website might be daunting, but it might prove more costly (in loss of business) if you don't. Once you have that sorted you can move on to the next tedious task of SEO and SEM.
SEO and Marketing of your website.
Now that you have a website of your own, you need to get visitors for your website. There are lot of companies that promise to get you loads of visitors, but you end up paying for quantity instead of quality. The reason, I say quantity is because you might get the spike in visitors to your website, but the quality is not there in the sense that the bounce rate will be close to a hundred. Bounce rate is the average time spent on the web page. For example if there are a thousand visitors, visiting your site who quickly navigated away and another hundred who visited the website and stayed on it browsing through its content, the conversion rate is better if you targeted those hundred instead of wasting time and money on the thousand.
Like I mentioned, SEO and SEM is a complex field and very tedious to do on your own. Nevertheless, if you feel you are up to it, let me give the gist of it. Firstly, your website on-page SEO (search engine optimization) should be done correctly. Include Meta title, Meta keywords, Meta description in your tags of your web pages. Once that is done, make sure your content is unique and relative to your title, keywords and description. Also make sure all your images on your website have the proper alt tags. If you have more than one page than you need to make sure your pages are named properly and more search engine friendly. http://seosri.com/seopackages is a better name to describe a page that lists the price packages for SEO services than http://seosri.com/123page4 etc.
The tedious task of SEM (search engine marketing) begins soon after you have optimized your on page material. You need to get quality backlinks to your website to increase its worthiness to the search engines. To get quality backlinks, you need to engage yourself in forums, blog posts, article submissions and directory submissions to start getting the backlinks you need. Be careful not to fall prey to those websites that promise you loads of backlinks for free. I have mentioned quality backlinks because the major search engines tend to ban the websites that use blackhat SEO techniques. Either you do it yourself manually or you choose a SEO company well.
There is of course the option of getting the targeted visitors through proper advertising on the major search engines like adwords on google and adCenter on bing. You control the total cost of your ad campaigns, your daily costs, the targeted audience etc. The only drawback is that you pay for this traffic. It may take time before your onpage SEO and your backlinks start getting you the organic (free) traffic you were looking for. Till then, the advertising will at least get you the customers that you are looking for.
Though the last phase to have a website of your own was a bit more tedious and time consuming, the rest of the process you will agree was not. You could be online within days and marketing your products as well. I wish you all the luck and hope to come across your website someday.
