I am not willing to accept the concept that we possess an unconscious mind that is absolutely inaccessible to us. In my opinion, this is a way for us to believe that for the majority of our lives, we are controlled by unavailable, invisible forces dwelling inside of us.
I know that we are frequently totally unaware of the reasons why we behave the way we do, but accepting this concept means that we don't have a choice in the matter whatsoever. And there is, indeed, a way for us to improve this condition: Awareness.
A way to do this is to hold frequent dialogues with your subconscious mind— constantly remind it that you are not willing to be on automatic pilot as you go through life.
Make it clear to your subconscious mind that you no longer want to be a puppet of the "ghost in the machine", whose orders come from the thinking habits that were programmed into it long before you had a conscious choice in the matter.
I frequently tell my own unconscious mind things like this:
"I know that I still have some pretty stupid thinking habits that were programmed a long time ago. I want you to know that I no longer wish to have my actions controlled by them. I will bring all of those old thought patters to my awareness, and I will make a conscious effort to be more and more aware of every aspect of my life"
As an example, not too long ago I maintained a conversation similar to this regarding my tendency to misplace my keys. I had a dialogue with my subconscious mind as if it were a real person, telling it I no longer desired my old thinking habits to drive me into misplacing my keys.
Now, I know this sounds like an unimportant little habit. However, applying this was huge, at least for me. It is very rare for me to misplace my keys now.
Try this out. Hold a conversation with your subconscious mind in which you make it crystal clear that will not tolerate any part of your life to be run by an unseen force which reacts based on outdated programming.
On the contrary, make a decision to no longer allowing any behavior to be controlled by your subconscious mind.
I challenge you to start being more aware of your thinking habits and start to hold this dialogues with your subconscious mind as a daily practice. This is actually what I did to finally put and end to a lifetime habit of being forgetful, particularly when it came to my car keys.
Once, I recall I excused my "can't-find-my-keys" habit by giving myself a label: "I'm forgetful."
In reality, Personas dwelling in my subconscious mind were useful excuses for explaining my habit of being forgetful . . . until I discovered how to be mindful.
I began to practice being more and more aware of what I did unconsciously, and it actually worked!
Every time I came inside my house, I consciously decided to be aware of my keys and how they felt in my hand —their texture and shape, their jingly sound— and then I placed them in a special spot reserved just for them. And little by little an old thought pattern programmed into my subconscious mind was brought to my awareness, forcing that old, comfortable excuse of being forgetful to be wiped out. (If I do, eventually misplace my keys, it only serves as a reinforcement of my commitment to stay mindful).
I hope you have found this article to be of value to you. It was inspired by an article from Dr. Wayne Dyer. His work is truly amazing, I truly recommend you check it out.
May you live a life of abundance, peace and happiness.
