What do you do?

How do you talk to people about your business?

When people ask you what you do, it's like asking who you are. This is because the outer world tends to equate what you do with your identity.

What do you say when people ask this? Most often, your initial thoughts go to your job. Sometimes you think of your family responsibilities or your volunteer work, if applicable.

What is Your Purpose?

I was thinking about this recently while reading Zig Ziglar's Born To Win. I realized that our jobs, our responsibilities and our other work are just part of our identity. But that's not who we are, and it's not really what we do. We aren't defined by what we do.

We are defined by our life's purpose. What we do along the way either supports our purpose, or it doesn't.

What does this mean for those of us who are in home and internet based businesses?

If you are in a home based business, I challenge you to think of your purpose in that business. If you are in a health and nutrition based company, then your purpose is to help other people get healthy. So maybe you're a fitness coach, or an "online fitness coach" especially if your clients are all over the country.

If you are in an information based business, then you are helping people to get the goals associated with that information (insurance, investing, marketing, etc.). Your purpose is to help people get more peace of mind, or earn money, or do their jobs more effectively.

What do I tell others?

I thought about what my purpose is in my affiliate marketing business. My purpose is to help other people earn extra money.

Many of us have trouble talking to people about our business or businesses. I have decided that my response to the question, "What do you do?" will no longer be "I'm a college student," or "I'm retired Navy." My response is now going to be, "I help people earn extra money online." This doesn't mean that I'm not valuing my being a Veteran, or earning a degree as an American Sign Language Interpreter. But this values what I perceive to be my purpose, and my purpose is to serve others by helping them earn more money online.

We all have goals in our businesses, and one of those goals is to become better in our own lives. Zig Ziglar said, "You can have anything you want if you will help enough other people get what they want." Our real purpose in business, not to mention life, is to serve others.
