Tennis - The Beautiful Game ( Part 2 )

Continued ... ... Getting along and things got a great deal more intriguing when for whatever reason I came to a decision to enroll in quite possibly the best club in the south of England called 'The West Hants Lawn Tennis And Squash Club' I'm afraid my recall about exactly where I was residing or exactly where I was working is a bit unclear when it comes to this time period as I have had many different jobs and moved around quite a bit though throughout the same region however suffice it to say this is the place where I was Tennis wise plus I really liked the club and went to as many club sessions as I could which was about 3 or 4 times weekly.

A Great Tennis Club!

This was certainly a sizable club and consisted of loads of Tennis members of all standards along with Squash, Racket ball, Badminton, a gym, Bridge as well as a snooker table up till the mid 1990's being on offer.

The Tennis membership did involve a playing in standard which although contentious and increasingly uncommon certainly nowadays did lead to that one typically had a reasonable as well as relatively competitive game which including certain rather engaging styles of play coming from those unconventional and typically un-coached players but that made things a bit more engaging.

An exciting development transpired in 1995, following being out of work for a short period i discovered an adult education company that trained people in each of the areas concerning general trades and as soon as was practical fortunate trainees were found placements for them in order to utilize their skills and learn further inside the industry. Well I was one of these fortunate individuals that managed to locate a position at ......'The West Hants Lawn Tennis And Squash Club' !!! ...... I could hardly believe my luck as I would be working in the industry which I really loved.

The position which was for a minimum period of 3 months was to consist of all manner of Tennis Club management which included, admin, bar work, duty management, court maintenance (which was actually great fun along with something i undertook beyond just about anything else! ), and I even helped assist with some of the coaching. in conclusion I enjoyed it considerably and I was at the Club within a functioning capacity for well over a year.

A Great Tennis Tournament!

Amongst the many highlights during the course of my tour of duty at West Hants was the 'Samsung Open' international Tennis tournament, this tournament was held at the club from 1996-1999 and was really first-rate. Due to the fact that I was working at the club at this time I had the chance to become employed through the Tournament by the Lawn Tennis Association as a 'Driver' or 'Chauffeur' and I tell you something whenever you see a Tennis player present a victory or runners up speech more often than not they are going to acknowledge the drivers in addition to all of the other individuals that help keep the tournament performing smoothly!

The 1997 Tournament possessed such good memories for a number of reasons (not all good! ). Greg Rusedski was participating and he was on a real high just after being the runner up at the US Open only a few days earlier! I had the chance to meet him and his partner Lucy (it was Greg's Birthday during the tournament and I had some of his scrummy Birthday cake!) and in actual truth being a driver had it's advantages because we were set up within the players lounge and so I came across all of the competitors and we shared the very same room for the whole week, just terrific. Something that went wrong for myself, a player together with an umpire was that one time when I visited the airport to pick these guys up I stupidly left the brand new Mercedes Benz courtesy car at the drop off/pick up point whilst I ran inside to find my people. I was genuinely only inside the terminal for less than 5 minutes given that they were waiting and in readiness for the run back to the Tennis club, as I ran out to get the car it was being hoisted onto a tow truck by the transport police... I begged the police lady to let me have the car back however it was simply too late... it was taken to the pound! Well as I ambled back to my people I was devastated, what the heck was I going to do given that I had no cash on me as well as no chance to get any ... ... Lo and behold one of my passengers, the splendid guy and umpire Carlos Bernardes saved the day thru offering to pay for the taxi to the pound and the expensive discharge fee in order to get the car back... God bless him:).
