There was a time not so long ago, less than 20 years, when the possibility of working out of home was confined to a tiny few. Business or work openings which might be run from your own home were infrequent. Often the picture evoked was of work at home mothers filling envelopes, as they were one of minority sorts of jobs that were being advertized intended at work at home moms.
By the mid 1990's things were changing. As communications improved, plus the internet came to be more commercial in use, it became practical for some companies and businesses to assist at least their workers to work from a home office. The pressure to do so came primarily in vicinities where office building space was expensive.
In my situation at the start of the 90's unveils the problem. The price of offices in London was astronomical; house prices are too expensive to afford with the exception of the rich and those who had entered the market decades earlier, or inherited a house from the pre-boom time period. I had a high income comparatively, maybe in the top 5% of earners during the time, yet there was fat chance I could afford to dwell in London.
The end result was that millions of commuters must commute frequently, often from far away. In my case that translated to 2 hours minimum to get to the office, and the same again in order to get home. That was the minimum! On a horrible day travel times can be an hour or 2 longer in either direction. Employees would get to work already very tired and tensed, hardly helpful for performance.
Even though I was not one of those who could take advantage of home based working, some enterprises and organizations did break the ice and get some employees to work from home. However, what that period did for me was to sow the seed. I disliked commuting, although I enjoyed the job I was doing at the time. I wished to have more control over my time and my life. Setting up my own business, based at home or close to home, became not solely a pipe dream but a requirement. I had had enough of the grind.
As it ended up, those years of commuting by a train gave me lots of time to create a plan. I soon got the seed of a business idea too. The major privatisation project I was project leader for involved outsourcing on a very big scale. My partner during the time was selling advertising space in a local newspaper. That sparked an idea. Surely, there must be small magazine publishers around who did, would like to, or might be persuaded to outsource their advertising sales. By 1995 my partner had got things started, and after that project finished, I went into that media business full time.
After a short while it was obvious to me I could never work for anyone else ever again. That has remained so ever since. That was prior to the internet, and after 2000 as the internet really exploded, the chances to make money from home by running an online business has given many 1000s of people the opportunity to begin their own business as well. Opportunities which were not there before. Jobs such as Envelope stuffing were no longer required. Undoubtedly, many enterprising work at home dads would go on to make moderate to huge income levels on the net. This sort of opportunities still exist at present.
