In Estonia internet access is considered as a basic right, like access to water and electricity.



I'm proud to say that Estonia is one of the most connected countries in the world. To be honest, it's hard to imagine that not everywhere are the same technological conveniences as we have. You get used to it so quickly and when you travel the world you automatically expect the same kind of solutions.

It is very nice that a little dot on the world map is showing so much guidance to others. Only sky is the limit – next Silicon Valley indeed.

So what are the things that make our lives so much easier?

Everyone knows Skype, not everyone knows that it was created in Estonia.

We have had free wifi for 10 years now and the 3G Wi-Fi is available throughout the country. Soon there will be 4G. As of today third of the country already has access to 4G connection.

This is an example of our mobile parking app. Just couple of clicks on your smartphone and you're parking.

After couple of years it's getting even more interesting, as the 100MB/sec connection vill speed up entire country.

Of course the e covernment.

Since the year 2000 our tax filing has been a norm and over 90% of people file online. The tax return is even pre-filled for you, so that it actually takes only couple of minutes to send it.

We've been using electronic ID cards since 2002. this is what makes the biggest difference. The ID card allows us to use multiple public services on the net. Social security, government portals, police, education, business, electronic signature, digital prescription system, banking, entertainment, tickets are just a few examples of the possibilities. Not to mention that it allows us to vote via internet.

Since 1996 when the Tiger Leap foundation was launched, we have every school plugged to internet and computing teaching starts from primary school.
