The art of studio drumming has been established in the 1920's and 1930's when record companies started their business and produced numerous of records for the consumers who were excited by new type of media which allowed them to carry their favorite music home on a record.
Most record companies - so to speak - owned bands who did the recording jobs for them as a steady job from 9 to 5. Many studio musicians recorded over 10.000 songs in 3 to 4 decades of being part of the recording industry.
One of the best and most famous session drummers in the 1970's, 80's and even 1990's is Kurt Kress (Curt Cress) who recorded drums for artists like Pet Shop Boys, Ike & Tina Turner, Eros Ramazotti, Cliff Richard, Chris De Burgh, Udo Lindenberg and Peter Maffay - just to name a few. In the 1980's Kurt Kress became so indispensable that he gained salaries of about 5.000 US$ per session. In contrasted to nowadays salaries for session musicians this is an enormous amount of money and it won't be regained probably.
Because of the invention of drum machines, samplers and finally computers, musicians became replaceable and music producers had the capacity to "record" all they needed for a song by "drag and drop" which caused a totally different approach of the way to make music and how it develops. But nowadays there are ways to include "human" musicians again without spending tons of money for hungry musicians.
Due to broadband Internet connections and online communication tools like Skype and other software some session drummers took the chance again to make a living from studio drumming and here is how it (mostly) works:.
Due to using their own setup like drums, microphones, preamps etc. they are capable to record from their own studio rooms. Consequences are that there are no hotel costs anymore which decreases the costs for a session enormously. Another point is that music producers don't need to own all the recording equipment on their own. Neither they don't have to gain experience on the way to record drums. So in the event a modern music producer is fed up with all these mechanical software drums without any human touch or passion they are able again to pay a small salary for such a remote drummer.
Some sessions start from 60-80 US$ for a single track relying on what kind if song has to be recorded and so on.
Although salaries won't be as enormous as in the 1980's there is a new chance for musicians to monetize their skills using the internet. Great skills as a musician or drummer in this case, passion for web marketing and the ability to speak about one foreign language open new doors of income for modern drummers.
