So your kids are at the age where they are getting and making friends invited to birthday parties or wanting to have a party of their own. What's the proper etiquette when it comes to planning a birthday party for your child. Here are some helpful ideas that may clear up some of your questions when it comes to your child's birthday parties.
What's The Best Age To Begin Hosting A Party?.
If your child is asking to have a party and are specific about what they 'd like to do and who they 'd like to come then they are probably old enough. If they don't ask to have a party then you could suggest it if you think they would like it, or maybe otherwise hold off and save yourself the stress of it all, your time to organize it, and of course the expense of doing it.
Who Should You Invite?
If your child doesn't want a big party then it's important to listen to their request. When their only safe place is invaded by lots of the kids they normally only see at school, it can be really overwhelming.
If they want the whole class to come then it's up to you if you can afford it, can handle it personally given your lifestyle or, if a large number of children will be ok to have in your home. Some suggest to add one extra guest to your child's age to be a good way to decide how many to invite, but I think it's all down to your personal preference given you know your child better than anybody.
How Long Should The Party Be?.
This is definitely a must consider when it comes to kid's birthday parties. If you are having a themed party then that will help decide the length of time from arrival to departure. On the invitations, be sure to list specific times for the party, and best to keep the party to no more than 2-3 hours. Your child's friends will be tired and ready to head home after then. You'll also be exhausted and ready for them to return to their parents.
Should Parents 'Drop Off' Or Invite Them To Stay?.
When it comes to kids birthday parties, it's a bit of a gray area. Obviously, for a toddler's party, you wouldn't want parents to just drop off their child but this all changes as kids get older.
Most parents won't have a problem leaving their child at a birthday party when they are age five or more because at this point you'll probably know many of the parents in their class and may feel comfortable leaving your precious one in their care.
If you're having a pool party or a party at a large restaurant venue then these are times where it would definitely be helpful to have parents stick around to help watch their kids. I recommend either asking a few parents ahead of time or else put something on the invitations about parents being welcome to stay.
When you get to know other parents well you may feel like asking them to stay and have a social event as well in another area of the house or outdoor BBQ. This really depends on the size of the house and how your child feels about having a lot of people around. After all, it is their party day.
The time of the day to host your party can be a tricky decision and there are a few issues to take note of. If you have a limited budget then it's best to just keep it simple and is a good idea if you're a first timer at being a host and making the party time to either finish before lunch or begin after lunch.
Either way, prepare simple party food and that won't hype the kids up with sugar, unless of course you are addicted to mayhem yourself.
Take Away Goodie Bags?.
After the children have sung happy birthday to their host and eaten some birthday cake, there is a bit of debate if you should bid your guests farewell with a goodie bag. If you want to make up little bags then it is completely up to you and if you have a themed birthday party, then you may wish to have some form of memorabilia to keep the theme going.
The main purpose is to give them a gift to thank them for coming to your party and, they usually will bring a birthday present for your child to the party. It's a small token and you don't need to spend a lot nor do you need to give them sweets full of sugar.
Thank You Notes For The Gifts.
It is polite to spend some time to send a Thank You note to each guest thanking them for their birthday present and to mention the actual gift itself. It does take some time to do but is a good thing to do. The note or card can be delivered by hand at school by your child where they can personally say thanks for coming as well.
There Are Great Alternatives To A Party.
If you don't want to invite the whole class for a party, it could be a good idea to let your child choose one or two friends to spend the day with doing fun activities and possibly even having a sleepover. Maybe you could take them to a movie or just take them all out for lunch at a place that has kid friendly food and service.
Whichever way you choose to spend your child's special day, just make sure the day is special for them.
Before you go to all the work of planning a big bash, ask your child what he or she wants to do. A little bit of research into kids parties can be a great idea and they may find something either online or in a children's magazine that they would really love to do and be a truly memorable occasion.
New Party Trends.
The latest party trend are Pop Star Parties where children get to experience a day in the life of their favorite Pop Idols. These are outcome based parties that are a lot of fun.
