Impressionist art first came about because painters were challenged by the products of a camera. Impressionism was born at the time when people start appreciating a camera rather than painting. That is because a camera can capture images in all its vibrant and realistic colors. The best part was the public can get images more efficiently. They can capture day to day events without waiting for months which is what usually takes a painter to complete a work.
But artists took this on as a challenge. And they were able to present great art works that were appreciated and still continue to be valued by the public.
What are the characteristics of impressionist art?
A lot of things separate impressionism from the classical way of painting. This is why the road to acceptance and recognition has not been easy for impressionist artist. There was a time when artists were ridiculed and harshly criticized for steering away from tradition. Over the years, impressionist art has gained reputation and began being appreciated for the beauty of art they present.
It is in the strokes.
What differentiates the technique of impressionism over the traditional way of painting is the use of short and broad strokes. The artist uses quick movements to be able to capture the subject's essence. That is the main focus instead of being concentrated on the fine points.
Wet Paint Application
Instead of the fine tuned, clean and crisp strokes often seen in traditional painting, impressionist work may seem like a patch of paint especially when viewed closely. That is because the colors of paint are applied side by side. The impressionist artist does not blend or only does minimal mixing in paint. This is responsible for creating a vibrant surface. Instead of mixing the colors on the art work, an impressionist does it in a way that the mixing of colors is left to the viewer's eyes.
With this art form, the artist is able to produce softer edges with assortment of colors by using wet paint. An impressionist does not do successive applications or waits for the paint to try. The application of the wet paint is instead overlapping.
Opaque Painting Surface
Another characteristic that sets impressionist art apart is the painting surface. Classical painters will take advantage of the thin paint films. This is how they create and manipulate effects. Impressionism on the other hand, uses an opaque painting surface.
A strange habit and strategy of impressionist artist is that they usually work in the evening. It is probably because this is the time they can create shadowy effects as realistically as possible.
Focus on the Outdoors and Natural Light
The biggest emphasis in impressionist art is natural lighting. Artists focus on the reflection of colors. They also pay a lot of attention to the reflection from one object to another.
Impressionism uses the outdoors as a usual background. Blue skies with the natural light reflecting on objects creating shadows are typical of an impressionist painting. The overall effect is vibrant and fresh representation.
