Abstract art is more known for the interesting colors and designs they possess. With it displayed, a property's value can increase. But because if its distinctiveness, abstract paintings can be quite tricky.
For an ordinary viewer who may not exactly have a fondness for art, it can appear as nothing but a splash of colors, accidental lines and objects. As a matter of fact, many people may dismiss this art as nothing more than child's play. But for someone who has a better understanding, every splash of color, every line and object in the painting can be eloquent.
What is it?
The most distinct quality of abstract art is that unlike other art types and forms, it does not use real world representations. A river may not look like a river. A person may not look anything close. It can often look distorted and random. But this is what some people consider to be pure. It requires skill not only from the painter but the viewer himself to stir up an idea or emotion with what is presented before him. And that is what some appreciates. It is what they call a primal art experience.
Is there even a skill involved in this?
Liking this art is a matter of taste and maturity as an art aficionado. But because of the lack of imagery and with the representation that seems to be child's play, many people criticize it as lacking in talent. It does seem like anyone or a five year old can come up with the same piece and put it up for an exhibit.
But this is not a test of the artist's skill in painting images as close to the real things as possible. What matters here is the artist's talent in being able to stir up a response from viewers. It does not literally represent reality. It replicates it instead in its own unique way.
How to understand abstract art?
This is not for everyone. Not everyone can appreciate what it is. But it is art in all its right.
Indeed, many people are particularly intimated by abstract art. It is simply because they do not understand it or know what to make of it. The subject matter is unclear and many fail to go past the seemingly random patterns and unclear images.
In order to understand this art form, one needs to have an open mind. The beauty of it is that it can accommodate any kinds of interpretations. It is not about figuring out what the artist's intention is. It is about coming up with your own understanding.
You have to let the art speak to you. After all, art is a representation, a combination of elements significant enough to influence the senses as well as the emotions and the intellect.
Needless to say, abstract art is very subjective. You either like it or you don't. But just because the art work cannot evoke a response or emotion from everyone does not make it less of an art. That is simply because appreciation of this art calls for an understanding of visual experience and it is something that does not come naturally to everyone.
