Impressionist art started in the 19th century and the Impressionist movement was led by Claude Monet, one of the most famous and influential Impressionist painters of all time. The term "Impressionism" was coined by a critic after Monet's painting called Impression, Sunlight. This movement had been criticized especially by conventional artists who used academic style of painting. The techniques used by the Impressionists were not learned in school but rather from their own experiences after experimenting with different techniques using different media. As time goes by, people start to see the beauty of Impressionism and learned to accept it as a painting technique.
In the 19th century, Impressionist painters only used oil on canvas because acrylic was not yet available at that time. Oil is more difficult to use because it does not easily dry. Today, you have the option to use acrylic paint which is easier to use. If you want to create an Impressionist painting using acrylic, you need to consider the tips below.
Choose a subject outdoors
Impressionist paintings are often done outdoors. This is because Impressionist artists want to capture the play of natural light on the subject. They try to finish their painting as fast as possible because they want the lighting to look exactly the same from beginning to end. For example, if you start to paint in the afternoon, make sure that you finish the painting in the afternoon as well when lighting does not have much difference from the start of the painting until the end. If you do not finish your painting within the same day, you can go back the next day to finish it, though it is much more difficult to capture the subject in its exact appearance as yesterday.
Combine colors as little as possible
In an Impressionist painting, the colors are applied side by side, not mixed together. This way, the mixing of colors depend on how the viewer see the painting, not on the painting itself. It was also mentioned that oil does not dry easily. This is not really a problem when it comes to creating an Impressionist painting because you can apply new paint over wet paint without waiting for the previous paint to dry. This gives the painting softer edges. For acrylic paint, you should spray a fine mist on your canvas from time to time to keep the paint from drying. As much as possible, you should also try to avoid black. Instead, you should use dark colors side by side that resembles black.
Do not focus on the details
In conventional painting, the artist is taught to paint all the details, even the small ones. This is different from Impressionism because this style of art does not focus on the details but on the essence of the subject. In fact, when you look at an Impressionist painting, it looks a little blurred, which only shows that Impressionist artists do not pay too much attention on the details of the subject but rather its essence.
Leave brush marks
Impressionism also allows its painters to leave brush marks on the canvas, unlike traditional painting where the painter has to smooth out any visible brush marks.
