Article Category: Advice
Author Name: Lara Fabans
Recently, a client of mine updated her website's shopping cart. Shortly thereafter, traffic tanked, and she didn't get any sales, which is unusual. We had talked about her keyword stuffing, and she was in the process of cleaning that up. She hadn't dropped off the first page results for her main five keywords, so I suspected it wasn't the dreaded Penguin slap, otherwise it would have happened already.
Step One: Emergency Mode
I came up with an emergency plan for driving traffic by having her send out an announcement on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram letting her followers know that there was an updated website, and what did they think about it. This served two purposes:.
Google monitors people going to a site. If they think you have good traffic, it will increase their opinion of you.
It would hopefully pull in a few new orders.
Step 2: Fix the Problem.
Then I put my head together with her tech guy, and we went over everything. And guess what we found?
The Google analytics snipped hadn't been copied over.
The sitemap. xml had not been properly updated. They switched urls from domain.com/shop/items to just domain.com/items when they changed over to the new version of the cart. Google does not like dead links. At all. Which is why she plunged to page 5 results.
So what can you do?
Believe it or not, sometimes the simplest things do fall through the cracks. Double check everything, no matter how simple. And Google provides a great tool called the Webmaster Tools for you to see crawl errors, sitemap errors, etc. If you have Google Analytics already installed, you can connect your site up.
If you have old, dead pages, you can request Google remove them from their index.
Ensure that all of the images have alt tags even if it's just "Pretty image of the night sky." Although, a ninja trick is to ensure your keyword that you're optimizing your page for is in this tag.
If you were slapped hard and are being penalized by Google, you'll have a lot more work involving removing back links, but I'll save that for another post.
The most difficult step is being patient. It can take two weeks for things to get back to normal, so find a few things to change, use your emergency plans, and then make adjustments every 10 days to optimize it back to health.
