Movies in 2013
Planning on going to the movies in 2013? It will be an exciting year, it will be another year of the same new, same new—so to speak.
Do you love the arrogant, steel-encased, mysteriously-powered Tony Stark of the Ironman series? If you do, you're in luck. Installment number three will be in theaters soon, with Robert Downey, Jr. reprising his role as the "devil-could-care," super-slick, high-tech, get-in-everyone's-face superhero.
At the otyher end of the hero spectrum, part two of the Hobbit will open in December. The epitome of the un-hero, Bilbo is short, hairy, clumsy, low-tech, and reluctant. While Tony Stark faces villains brandishing all sorts of lethal technology, Bilbo is beset by foes who possess supernatural senses and powers. While Tony Stark blows his enemies away with superior fire power, Bilbo's enemies—no matter how powerful and treacherous routinely come up short against the strength and clarity of a simple man guided by a powerful moral code.
Leaving Earth and Middle Earth, this summer, Star Trek—for the 12th time—takes viewers deep into outer space for another adventure. The cast must soon be into its third generation as the staying power of this franchise has just about outlived two generations of actors.
There are more movies coming out in 2013, including Johnny Depp as the Lone Ranger. So what's different and exciting about these and any movies? Aren't they all basically repeating the same themes of adventure, danger, overcoming great odds, the individual's triumph over the collective, and so on and so forth...? The packaging changes, the names, places and circumstances change, but the overall story is repeated over and over. So why do we continue to go back and see the same basic struggle of good vs. evil, over and over again?
Is it because we secretly long for similar battles because our everyday existences are rather boring and pedestrian? Isn't there truth to the adage that you are only truly alive when you are actually risking your very life? Isn't that what many soldiers experience when they return to civilian life after experiencing the rush and panic of battle? Do movies offer the respite of allowing us to live "on the edge" for a while, to experience—even if only vicariously—what it's like to face and conquer life or death situations.
Where else can you experience life at its fullest? There are the extreme sports, such as jumping off cliffs with parachutes, flying experimental aircraft, saturation diving, sky diving rock climbing, and bombing down a mountain side on skis, bike, or snowboard. These provide the same "all senses on edge" excitement.
I believe we seek out these experiences of adventure and heroism because for the most part our lives are so mundane, predictable and devoid of surprises and danger. Take our caveman ancestors, for instance: every day was completely unpredictable. Every trip out of the cave was a battle of brains and brawn to get the day's meal or become it. Early civilizations provided a bit more security, but still the uncertainties of who might invade or overrun one's land kept everyone on alert. Hundreds of years later, people still lived day-to-day knowing that survival was only guaranteed as long one could work for one's upkeep and fend off those who would try to steal one's wages.
In the Twentieth century, man could for the first time count on health, income, and safety guarantees, and as a result life became predictable and boring. There's just no keeping us happy, is there? So what to do?
Watch more movies?
Hardly.
Today's real life experience of strife, battle, risk and victory is to start a business. If you want your life to be more exciting, if you want to add meaning, if you want variety, start a business. Make some commitments, set some goals, and most of all, take some risks. Let some of your security ride on an uncertain outcome. Step out on the edge, jump off, and learn to fly in that moment when not learning will mean going "splat."
Trust me, if you face those odds you will fly. At first it will be hard, but eventually, it will get easier, and with more practice, you won't be struggling to stay aloft, you'll be soaring!
Get in the battle, join our army of success-minded individuals.
It's that Simple,
Jan
