The first thing to do when starting an herb garden is to list the herbs that one likes and constantly uses in the kitchen. With that list as a starting point, the necessary research on how to cultivate one's favorite herbs will commence. One should know as much as possible on the different needs of each plant. Each herb have their own characteristics that would determine how much space should be given in the garden, where in the garden should it be planted, which other plant can be placed alongside it, and whether the plant should be grown in an indoor or outdoor garden. Information can easily by gleaned from gardening books, online gardening sites and gardening clubs if you have one in your community.
Armed with enough information, next thing to do is to design the indoor or outdoor garden, or both if you have the enthusiasm, energy and resources for it. You can start your herb garden design mission by drawing the dimensions, the placement of the plants and other things you want in your garden on a piece of paper. Make sure to put space for you to pass when harvesting and that the plants won't crown into each other.
For indoor gardens, windowsills that face south or west are recommended. Growing herbs in pots is advisable in a sunny area but should not be susceptible to intense heat and wind. It is recommended to install plant lights in order to supplement natural light during wintertime. Fill up the pots with a mixture of peat, vermiculite and perlite. Limestone could be added to make the soil non-acidic. Drainage holes are important such that the soil is kept moist but not flooded with water. Soil in pots dries faster so frequent watering may be in order during the summer months.
For outdoor gardens, choose a site that will get around six hours of direct sunlight daily. Know which herb needs sun and which one should be in partial shade. From there, one can decide the planting arrangement. The soil should have good drainage. Drainage can be improved though by using raised beds or adding organic matter on the soil like compost, peat moss, or composted manure.
To actually start with the planting, fill up starting trays with your soil mix and plant a seed according to the depth specific to that plant. Seeds need a warm room and moist soil to germinate well. When the plants have sprouted leaves, they can already be transferred to either the pots in your indoor garden or in the raised beds that you have prepared outdoors. Make sure though that the plants are hardy enough before transported outdoors. Some gardeners expose their new plants gradually to the sun and outside elements by a few hours' increments in a day over the course of a week or two in order for the plants to get used to the conditions properly.
Starting a mini herb garden is actually quite easy. With careful planning, small amount of initial effort and a genuine love for herbs, one can enjoy full-flavored dishes from a variety of herbs for a long time.
