For the cook who extensively uses herbs in preparing dishes, having an herb garden ensures a steady supply of herbs for instant use or storage. Five popular herbal plants to grow at home are basil, parsley, thyme, mint, and rosemary. Aside from being versatile and can be used in a good number of dishes, these herbs are easy to grow and care for.
Basil. This herb is commonly used fresh when cooking. It can also be eaten raw. It is an essential ingredient in the Italian sauce called pesto. Sometimes, it is used with fresh fruit for jams and sauces. Basil is best grown in hot and dry conditions. In the cold climates of Northern Europe, Canada and the northern part of the US, it can be grown during late spring or early summer, faring well in a sunny spot. It can be grown indoors in a pot and under strong sunlight like in a greenhouse, but also can thrive in a basement under fluorescent lights.
Parsley. Often used as a garnish, parsley can also provide a fresh flavor to potato dishes, rice dishes, soups, stews, casseroles, and sauces. It goes well with a lot of meat dishes like fish, chicken, lamb, pork, and beef. Parsley is best grown outdoors and in deep pots. Parsley can also be grown indoors but require at least five hours of sunlight daily. The seeds take at least six weeks to germinate but once they grow, the plant is easy to take care for.
Thyme. This herb is a favorite to many cooks as it blends well with other herbs and spices. It is used to flavor mostly dishes with lamb and tomatoes. What makes this herb one of the most popular herb garden plants is that it doesn't need to be cared for so much. It just needs soil or pots that have good drainage and that's it. There's no need to water it all the time. Lastly, when dried or kept for storage, it retains its flavor better than other herbs.
Rosemary. The strong and fresh odor of this herb makes it a usual complement to meat and poultry dishes, especially steaks or roasted meat. Rosemary leaves when steeped in hot water can be a refreshing tea drink. The rosemary plant can be grown in pots or straight into the garden soil. Depending on one's aesthetic sensibilities, one can either prune the leaves or just let the plant be as it has a tendency to grow large. It can easily grow off from an existing plant just by simply cutting off a shoot and planting it to the soil. It grows easily and does not get easily damaged by pests.
Mint. The leaf of the mint is the culinary heart of this plant. It has a wide array of culinary applications in teas, drinks, syrups, candies, ice creams, jellies, and teas. On top of that, mint leaves also heve medicinal and cosmetic uses. Drinking mint tea aids digestion, and essential oil of mint is widely popular in aromatherapy. Generally, the mint plant can grow almost anywhere with just enough supply of sunlight and water. They grow fast and should be grown in pots, so it is ideal for those looking for hassle-free options when growing herbs in pots.
