Getting started today in the world of Chinese porcelain is probably the hardest time in history to begin. And with the growing number of buyers just in China alone, it looks like the problem will only grow.
Where does one begin? I've always looked to books while I was growing up to learn about whatever it was I wanted to know. Now with the internet, things seem to be getting even easier. The greatest thing about using the internet today is that it's free. Before the internet, a collector only had books, auction catalogs, the auctions themselves and maybe a small society of collectors to resource information. These, to me, are still the best sources of information and my library is still growing.
I will make a list of must have books for the beginning collector somewhere in the site and link it here when I do. Try to read and buy at least 75 % of the beginner books before buying anything if you are just beginning to collect Chinese porcelain. They will save you time and money. No one wants to get burned when buying antiques. And from my experience, Chinese antiques are where most collects do just that, get burned; ripped off.
The problem seems to stem from the fact that most people have no clue what they are talking about in the world of Chinese porcelain. Think of how many people there are in the world and after 20 years of collecting, I am lucky if I have met 100 that really seem to know and understand what they're talking about. Add to that dealers looking to make a quick buck by ripping you off, dealers that simply don't understand what they have, people on the internet selling fakes, misrepresentation of words such as Imperial simply because a piece has a blue reign mark and you can begin to understand the need to arm yourself with as much information as you can before buying anything!
Since you have found this site, begin by memorizing the glossary of terms you can find here. You will see these words over and over as you get more involved with porcelain and the people involved in its buying and selling. I could easily write a description of a piece of porcelain that is a piece of junk and make it sound like the investment opportunity of a life time with a few simple fancy key words and all can be true and legit.
There are some great places to look on the internet for Chinese porcelain. Begin with a few collections held in major museums that have an on-line website. It's a great way to begin getting familiar with reoccurring designs.
When looking at the pictures on this site, begin asking yourself some questions about what you're looking at. Look at as much detail as possible. Small minute details are the things that will save you the most money when buying porcelain.
After looking at a few major collections, look for a couple of dealers. Often dealers of real antiques will give better close ups of pieces so that buyers in the know can see they are genuine pieces. If the only pictures you can see are blurred or unclear, never ever buy a piece! I thought I knew more than the seller on 2 occasions and thought it was just some inexperienced seller with a bad camera and I was buying a great piece under market value. Both times I bought junk! After getting what I paid for and looking again, I feel that's exactly what the seller wanted me to do. Don't fall for it. Ask for better pictures. If there is no response, skip it. There WILL be others.
Underline or use a highlighter to mark important details and look back through the books every so often. Even better, look for sellers of fakes and compare their pictures to the ones in your books and see where you can find the differences.
The last thing you should do before buying anything is to get a few good auction catalogs. One point when buying auction catalogs is to try to buy the newest ones at first unless you have a reason to buy the older editions. I've purchased a few and have found, frankly speaking, of no assistance to me in my pursuit of learning about Guangxu period porcelain.
