Whether you love cooking or you just want to see small plants in your kitchen windows, you should consider growing herbs in pots. This is one good thing about deciding to have this type of garden. You do not need to have a large tract of land or space to grow herbal plants. You can just use some small pots and place them in your kitchen or window sills, depending on the kind of plants that you want to grow.
Before you start purchasing pots and herb seedlings to start your small herb garden at home, you should first learn some useful tips and information about planting herbal plants in small plants. You can review the following paragraphs below.
Choose your herbs
You have to take note that not all plants can be planted in pots. You have to research about the kinds of herbal plants that can grow in pots and can live in small spaces. Fortunately, the kinds of herbal plants that can grow in pots are those that are commonly used in cooking such as sage, lemon balm, sweet marjoram, mint, basil, coriander, ginger, thyme, oregano, and hot pepper. Your dishes will surely be delicious when you add these spices when you prepare and cook food.
Prepare your pots
Since you will be using pots for your herbal garden, you should pay attention to the kinds of pots that you are going to buy. Select the right sized pots for your garden. For single planting, you should choose pots with a diameter of at least 10 inches. You will need bigger pots for multiple plants in one pot. Another consideration is the drainage. Make sure that your pots have holes underneath for good drainage.
To prepare the pots, you have to fill them up about a quarter of their depth with gravel. This will ensure that water will drain properly from the pots. Once you put in the gravel, you also need to fill up the pots up to three quarters of the pots' depth with soil or compost.
Plant your herbal seedlings
You have to gently pull the herb seedlings from their tray or temporary pots. Before planting them to the new pots, make sure that the roots are spread out evenly. Gently place the plant into the soil. You can dig a small hole into the soil using your fingers to ensure that the roots and stems will not break. If you are going to plant more than one seedlings into the pot, you should leave at least 15cm of space between each seedling. This will prevent the plants from competing against each other for water, sunlight, and nutrients.
Once you are finished planting your herbs, you should now add more compost into your pots. If you have seedlings that are taller than the other seedlings in the same pot, make sure that you put them in the center of the pot. You should also trim the seedlings by cutting their stems in half to encourage leaf growth among all the seedlings.
