Is there a reason to choose a specific whitening lotion for Asian skin rather than a product designed for other skin types?
A question that is commonly asked by Asian customers when they are looking to purchase skin whitening or lightening creams and lotions, is whether or not they should choose a product that has been designed specifically to lighten pigmentation in the skin of those with Asian descent compared with those originating from other regions.
The answer to this question is both yes and no.
But before you stop reading thinking this article isn't going to help you at all, there are a couple of really important but basic fact you need to be aware of, to help explain this 'yes and no' answer.
There is really no such thing as 'Asian skin'
In the first instance, the definition of 'Asian skin' covers a vast area with literally thousands of different people groups stretching from the region of the ancient Persian Empire (the area of Iran, Iraq today) through South Asia (places including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh), the vast region of Central Asia (all those countries ending in 'stan), the myriad of different people groups making up China, the distinct people groups like the Japanese, Korean or Mongol (who once rules an empire that stretched from central Europe to the Pacific and from modern day Syria to Vietnam), and then the many different people groups of South East Asia such as those originating from modern day Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam or the Philippines.
As you can see, there is so much diversity across this region that it is simply impossible to say what is 'Asian skin'.
How about skin lightening cream/lotion for specific Asian skin types?
Does the answer change if you break down the region into specific groups of people that look similar of have similar skin pigmentation?
No, this doesn't change anything because the real reason it's not necessary to specifically choose a whitening product for Asian skin or any variation of Asian skin is that simply all human skin will respond to skin whitening products in the same way and there is no difference between the skin makeup between one ethnic group and another – even though naturally some might have a natural level of pigmentation that is different to others.
The demand for skin lightening is mainly Asian in any case
The entire skin lightening industry – which now tops US$10 billion in annual sales – was created over the past 50 years by cosmetic companies eager to 'cash in' on the common view in many parts of Asia that lighter skin tones in women are preferable.
This belief is very much something that occurs in Asia and as a result, with only a few exceptions, there is little demand for skin whitening products outside the Asian region.
What is important is finding skin lightening products designed for Asian customers, not their skin!
While there is no advantage in seeking whitening lotion for Asian skin in particular, what is important is looking for products that are designed with a true understanding of the needs of Asian consumers. And with more than 50% of all skincare products sold to women in Asia having some skin whitening properties, this becomes even more important.
Some would argue that the dominant multinational cosmetics and skin care companies, who are in the vast majority headquartered in Europe or North America, are completely in tune with the Asian consumer base – other would argue that this is not the case, and only a company that is headquartered in the region (not a subsidiary or branch) can really understand the market.
Regardless, there are some important issues that need to be considered and these are the questions you, as a consumer, should be asking:
1. Am I happy with the ingredients this company using – natural, artificial, their proven level of safety and how long they have been used for
2. Am I happy with the source of their ingredients – where they obtain them, and what level of care is taken
3. How reliable and trustworthy is the company? Do they offer a mo0ney back guarantee on their products (and if not, why not?)
4. Are their claims realistic and do they offer good levels of information that appears trustworthy?
5. Are the ingredients contained in the products clearly stated and does the list of ingredients match the marketing related to the product? (For example, many times products are marketed as 'natural' or 'organic' when they may have only a percentage of natural/organic ingredients, which you may find misleading)
6. Where is this company based, and do they seem to really understand the local market and customers?
There are many companies and products that would be able to tick all of these boxes. With a small amount of effort you will be able to find the company and product that best meets your needs.
