The roulette wheel and the roulette table together form the most important part of the game of roulette. No game of roulette can be played without the wheel and the table. The wheel is used to play the game and the table is used to make bets.

The roulette ball is also important but there is nothing to know about it. It is a small white colored ball that is introduced to the spinning roulette table and winners and losers are decided depending on where the ball comes to rest when the roulette wheel comes to a stop. The ball spins in the opposite direction of the spinning wheel.

There are two types of wheels used in roulette.

European wheel
The European wheel has 37 slots – one slot each for the numbers 1 through 36 and an additional slot for 0. This wheel is used in casinos all over the world except where the American wheel is used. The house edge for this wheel is 2.70%.

American wheel
The American wheel has 38 slots – one slot each for the numbers 1 through 36 and two additional slots for 0 and 00. In the beginning American roulette wheels had one more slot for the American Eagle. But this slot has been removed since and now there are only 38 slots. The American wheel is used throughout the USA, Canada, South America and the Caribbean. The house edge for this wheel is 5.26%.

The roulette table is a felt table with three columns. 0 and 00 sit at the top of the columns in an American wheel table while 0 is present at the top of an European wheel table. Below the 0 and 00 are the numbers 1 through 36, arranged in a sequence in three columns. Each number follows the previous number and you can read them in sequence like you would read a book.

The numbers on the roulette table are either red or black except for 0 and 00 that appear green. 0, 00 and the numbers 1 through 36 form the inner portion of the table. The outside portion consists of several boxes with groups of numbers.
