Names of various tractor parts are utilitarian at best. They sacrificed creativity in favor of usefulness so that tractor owners will know exactly what the function of a specific part is. Names like "windshield wiper", "oil filter", and "silencer" tell exactly what it does, and also, what to expect when that certain part manages to get faulty or damaged.
In the case of silencers, the farmer will know that there is trouble afoot when the tractor 's engine starts getting noisy . That means that the silencer or the muffler is not doing its job properly. Most often than not, it will need to be replaced.
Shushing the Engine
Tractor have been compared to lions and tigers-generally, beasts of the human world. One thing that most beasts have in common is a loud, powerful roar-something that will announce their presence and their supremacy. In automobiles, however, the opposite is desired-the engine should have as little to no noise at all; should a noise be heard, it should come out as nothing more than a gentle purr.
Sometimes, though, it cannot be helped when tractor get to roar on their own. Loud engines, knocking sounds, chattering, and other such noises are indicative that there is something faulty inside. This means than an operation is in order, and that a transplant is needed.
It is the silencer's job to shush the engine's roar. It cools down the rush of extremely hot air from the engine as it burns the gas and fuel, effectively slowing the air and eliminating the noise. The problem is that this hot air is no ordinary air-it is a highly toxic compound from the burning of gasses and oils. As the silencer cools the compound, some of its acidic residue coagulates, settling along the bottom of the pipe, enough to cause problems over time.
Replacing Silencers
Nobody expects to replace the silencer alone; it is much easier to replace the whole exhaust pipe that houses the silencer. Fortunately, this part is as easy as hoisting a picture into place.
Another fortunate thing is that exhaust pipes and silencers are easy to find and cheap online. They come in different shapes and sizes, too, though it would be best to check if the pipe is compatible with the make and model of the tractor first.
The real trick in replacing the muffler of the tractor is to hoist it up. This is done with a jack, placed under the hydraulics and pumped a few feet upwards just enough until a person can safely lie underneath. Take special precaution to brake the tractor so that it does not roll away.
Once underneath, it should be easy to find the hangers that attach the muffler to the car. Be very careful when handling that muffler-though it is situated apart from the body to allow cooling of the fumes, it is still made of metal and will therefore be hot to touch.
Once the old set of pipes are taken off and the new ones are installed, the person can now set the car back down and rev up the engine. The sound should now be pleasing to the ear.
Sometimes, all it takes to know the problem of a tractor is to listen to what it says. After all, even mufflers know how to make a sound when they are asking for help.
