Nothing can make a man feel manlier than tinkering with his set of wheels. All that shiny chrome and metal in the fenders, exhausts, hubcaps, and all other tractor parts are the ultimate expression of manliness. Coincidentally, women seem to be attracted to all things shiny as well, giving men all the incentive to keep their farm machinery sparkling like diamonds. Unfortunately for men, however, keeping all those parts shiny, sparkling, and in excellent shape is not that easy.
What is an Exhaust and Why is it Important?
As a general rule, each tractor part has its own use , and is therefore important. Exhausts, for instance, are responsible for directing the engine's fumes away from damaging the interior . It is the metal pipe located at the tail end of a tractor, and is the one where all the smoke comes from.
A tractor's engine needs fuel, so it constantly burns gas and oil to keep the it running. This creates heat and a byproduct of acidic fumes that if left inside the engine, can corrode the metal parts within. The exhaust pipe is strategically placed quite a ways from the body's heat so the fumes can cool down and the acidic compounds condense first so the end smoke will be less acidic.
Exhaust Maintenance and Repairs
There is not much anyone can do about exhausts but to have them replaced or to have them repaired when necessary. Luckily, exhaust pipes and other spare parts can be bought online, and self-installation and replacement are not difficult to do.
But how can someone know when it is time to replace one's exhaust? Usually, when a car has a problem, it will let its owner know. One of the signs that a car's exhaust pipe should be replaced is when the car's engine gets noisy.
When a car is in its excellent condition , the car's engine runs smoothly enough that hardly any sound is made at all-something that car enthusiasts call as "purring". But when that purr turns to a roar, one of the first things to look at should be the exhaust.
The reason for this is that there is a part inside the exhaust pipe called the muffler . As the name suggests, it silences the rush of hot air coming out of the engine and in and out of the exhaust. Over time, corrosive residue builds up inside the pipe and either clogs or corrodes the silencer, producing the telltale roaring sound.
Replacing Exhausts
A person can have tractor dealers and mechanics replace their exhaust pipe for a price , but replacing it on their own is quite easy to do. All they would need is a car jack and the replacement pipe.
Once the tractor has been lifted by the jack and secured in place, the owner can go under the tail end and locate the hangers from where the pipe is attached. Once he or she detaches the old, busted pipe, he or she can hang the new one in place.
Understanding the basics of exhaust pipes is easy. Now all those burly men can keep their exhausts nice and shiny!
