Air filters make use of various media, but their main purpose is to let air inside the engine and trap any element that may damage it. These filters can be compared with standard nets. Air filters are generally made of various materials, the most common ones being cotton gauze or dry paper. Nonetheless, they can also be made from foam and oil-impregnated cotton. Typically, foam filters result in excellent flow; however, they are not that durable. On the other hand, oil-impregnated cotton fibers can filter dust particles well.

Fuel filters are basically the same. They prevent dirt and debris from entering the fuel line of vehicles. When these filters fail to function properly, your engine will not be able to run smoothly. Hence, it is very important for you to find out the common symptoms of bad filters.

Engine hesitation is one of the most common symptoms of bad fuel filters. If you want your engine to run properly, it should have a steady fuel supply. In case the filter gets clogged with debris or dirt, it can impede the flow of fuel into your engine.

As a result, there would be stumbling or engine hesitation. Engine hesitation usually occurs when vehicles accelerated from a stop. Another common sign is rough engine idle. Engines that run in an erratic, jumbled, or rough manner can be caused by bad filters.

Rough engine idle occurs when there is abnormal engine combustion. This condition can affect your engine in a negative way. Abnormal engine combustion may also occur when fuel flow is limited due to a plugged filter. When this happens, the performance of your engine will decline.

In more severe cases, bad filters can prevent vehicles from starting. No-start vehicles usually occur when fuel filters become plugged and are not able to let fuel flow into the engine. When fuel cannot flow into the engine, the vehicle will also not be able to start. Plugged filters usually occur in old vehicles that are equipped with carburettors.

In addition, bad filters can result in poor or low speed performance. Tractors with dirty filters may still run at high speeds. However, they may have difficulty in running at low speeds. This is because high and low speeds differ when it comes to fuel flow pressure.

When the speed is high, the fuel pump pressure is enough to force engine fuel through the obstructed filters and into your engine. Hence, your engine is able to run smoothly. On the other hand, the fuel pressure does not become sufficient to overcome fuel filter obstruction at low speeds. This cases poor or erratic engine performance.
