When people want to escape from the ordinary and the insanity of their normal, everyday lives, they turn to the mundane and insane normalcy of everyday gaming lives. In a game, they could be hired assassins, military ops agents, intergalactic superheroes, or even a pixelated version of themselves. Video games have a vast selection of genres to choose from, it is like being reborn.
But how can a person play as the God for their computer-generated personas? Through a controller , of course. This is both handy and irksome-only because one cannot control a complete character with only less than 10 buttons, especially cumbersome ones, at that. The controller's design makes responses lag drastically when players need to press a succession of buttons. Luckily, even controllers have their own superhero mode now-via the Avenger controller.
Superhero Suit
The Avenger controller is not a controller per se ; it is actually a casing for the already existing console controller. There are separate Avenger models (or "suits") available for the Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers. What it does is enhance the way gamers can play by remapping the buttons in a way that lag time is drastically-even completely-reduced.
The superhero suit does this by eliminating unnecessary buttons. With a normal Xbox or PS3 controller, the player's thumb constantly switches between navigating via the joysticks and pressing the variety of buttons (X, Y, A, and B, at the most). Switching from joystick wiggling to button mashing is fine when playing idle games or games that are not constrained by real-time, but this can take a serious toll on games that require instantaneous reflexes, such as shooting games, or action-packed sports (but mostly shooting games).
Lightning Speed
Once the native controller is housed inside the Avenger Controller, the XYAB buttons are remapped into hair-release triggers that are controlled not by the same thumb used to handle the joystick, but by fingers previously used to sit back and grasp the controller itself . The XYAB buttons are now controlled by flicks of the index and the middle fingers of both the left and the right hand.
This might not seem like much of a change, but this improves reaction and reflex times by as much as 10 to an impressive 80 percent. This makes sense as the thumb does not need to swish from button to joystick repeatedly. Players can now fire guns while moving at the same time, or reload and switch weapons in a flash. In a world where every split-second counts, this iota of difference in reaction and lag time could mean everything.
Great Power Comes with Great Responsibility
Is the Avenger Controller made for everyone? Not necessarily. Such timing and precision in controls are only advantageous to real-time games and first-person shooters. Any player who is not into these genres will do well with the stock controller.
But, hey, not everyone can be a superhero.
