A new product in the gaming industry created a buzz earlier in May of 2012, sending a great number of gamers to stores all over the USA. This mass of players soon wiped away all units within a day after it was officially launched into the market. What started as a buzz became a deafening roar.
The buzz-maker, of course, is none other than the Avenger controller, the game-changing equipment from N-Control. It is the controller that remaps original Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 controllers into what looks like a Tarantula-infested Xbox or PlayStation armored suit. And no matter what kudos it got in many reviews online, one question still remains: is it worth the $50 price tag?
The Targeted Audience
The first thing that the manufacturer has to question is: who are the people who are most likely to buy the product? Right after answering that question, they should answer the one that quickly follows it: can they afford it?
There is no question that gamers are the targeted audience of the Avenger controller. With a claim of reduced lag time and increased reflex sensitivity, gamers, especially FPS or first-person shooting games players, are the ones who are most likely to drool upon this worthy arsenal. But the next question requires a bit more careful consideration, because can gamers opt to shell out $50 dollars for a controller they will only use during shoot fests?
Considering that most gamers are in their teens, a $50 item is a huge splurge. True, there are adult gamers who have stable jobs and can afford to spend fifty dollars outright , but this is taking into consideration the thousands of gamers who rushed to the stores when the Avenger controller was first released.
On the other hand, updated gaming has always been pricey . If they have the guts to spend $50 on a professional-grade controller modification gadget, that means they have already spent $100 or more in buying the console, not to mention a few more dollars for the game CD. Taking that into consideration, a $50 mod might not be so bad.
What They are Getting
It all comes down to the goods. What are people getting for fifty dollars? For most people, not much; but for serious gamers, an impressively whole lot. There is a reason why the Avenger sold out fast. It tossed out blatant claims of changing the way gamers played FPS games, and then wowed everyone when it rose up to the challenge and claimed its stake. The controller did what it said it would do, and then some.
For one thing, it indeed changed the way players handled their games. Whereas players using ordinary controllers relied on frantic button mashing (coupled with luck that thumbs will not accidentally bump with the joystick), gamers using the Avenger experienced a more natural feel as firing the in-game's weapons are now controlled by pulling a trigger on the modified controller. The then-idle fingers-the pointer and the middle-that used to do nothing but squeeze the handles, now get more work done by handling the four action buttons (X Y A B) that are crowding the right thumb. Everyone gets a job to do, and in that way, everyone does their job well.
Another point of interest is that in freeing up the pointer and the middle fingers, the Avenger controller also opens up the palms, surprisingly reducing a player's instant reaction to squeeze hard on the handles during intense moments of play. This minimizes cramps and sore palms and lets players enjoy the game for hours and hours.
So, to the question, is the Avenger worth the $50? To a non-gamer, probably not. But to someone who enjoys the game? Absolutely.
