If you're entertaining the thought of enlisting your dog in dog shows, it is imperative that you set up a training program. A dog training program can never be successful without shaping a dog's behavior the right way. To do proper "shaping", one must reinforce positive behavior by administering positive reinforcements each time that behavior has been displayed. Forming habits is a step by step process, one in which you don't even need to use physical corrections.
Proper training of dogs relies on the basic principles of operant conditioning. Through the use of signs, you can reinforce a dog to act a certain way, but not in a way that seems forced. The basic princible behind it is that the dog acts on its own free will, and discovering that a certain act produces good results, it is more likely to repeat the action. The good result can be in the form of a dog treat, petting, a praise, and other stimuli that are pleasing to your dog.
To properly train your dog for dog shows, using a marker signal on top of the positive reinforcement promises success. The most popular marker signal for dogs is a clicker. This is a small object where you only have to press a button to produce a clicking sound. Once your dog performs a certain behavior that you wanted it to exhibit, just press on the clicker followed by the primary reinforcement (a dog treat, for example). The clicker is like the whistle being used by trainers for dolphins. More and more dog trainers and owners are using the clicker on account of its positive results.
The marker signal is important in a way that it makes apparent the signal that a dog has earned the positive reinforcement. Once a dog gets familiarized with the clicker, you may notice that it perks up its ears every time you press the clicker button. After lengthened use of the clicker, you may decide to not use it and still produce the intended result, as long as you think that the dog is already intrinsically enjoying the behavior you wanted to reinforce before.
The best part about a marker signal is that you can use it for other tricks and actions. A dog is good at associating signals, so once you've trained it to hop over a hurdle through the use of the clicker, you can easily follow it up with another trick (such as standing on two legs, for instance) using the same marker signal. So you see, everything is made easier once you've established with your dog the fact that the clicking sounds always follow the desired behavior, whatever that behavior may be.
Also keep in mind that the clicker should not be used excessively. You can reinforce certain acts for dog shows, but reinforcing too many actions might just confuse your pet. Reinforce over 12 certain acts and the dog might just end up doing actions that will be detrimental to what you intended the dog to do in a particular dog show.
