If you like show dogs, then planning on making a show dog out of your loyal canine friend might be just the thing to do. Keep in mind that having a show dog that performs at the optimum level requires a lot of commitment, continued maintenance, and endless monitoring. That means you should have the financial means, the time, and the patience to make sure that your dog will be an achiever in show dog circuits.
In judging the winner for a show dog competition, breed standards should be met accordingly. This means that your dog should be of pure breed. This is not to take away from dogs of mixed breeds, but this standard has been the basis for show dog tournaments for many years already.
When we talk of breed standards, coat appearance matters a lot. There should be a flow to the coat, an apparent smooth appearance that lends grace and beauty to a dog, especially while it moves. That is why show dogs, or any dog for that matter, require food of the best possible nutrition, preferably those that are high in protein.
Judges will most certainly touch your dog's coat as it checks the bone structure. Having a gleaming coat should invariably win your dog high points in the judge's table. It should also be noted that artificial colors may cause your dog to be disqualified. So any wacky pet dye job you may be planning on should be no use here.
It goes without saying that an obese dog won't have much chance of winning as a show dog. As a dog owner, it would be very irresponsible to allow a dog to become so fat. Not only is an obese dog unsightly, it's also unhealthy.
Health counts in these types of competitions, and you will be required to present a health certificate before you can enlist your pet in a competition. So make sure to pay your veterinarian a visit so that all the required vaccinations and tests will be administered on your dog.
Feed your dog the right amount. Set a regular exercise routine for your dog by taking it out for regular walks daily. Set up a big area where it can freely run around and play fetch in. That way, not only do you get a physically fit dog, you also get a happy dog.
It's also important to note that show dog competitions aren't just beauty pageants. Attitude counts a lot as well. If your dog has a happy disposition, the judges will take notice and give it a higher score. A dog might be the best looking one in a competition, but it will most certainly lose if it looks sad and skittish about interacting with the judges.
Last of all, keep in mind that your dog's happiness takes precedence over everything. If you provide a dog's needs – keep it well-fed and watered, give it regular exercise, give it enough play time, and love – then you're already doing everything right by your dog. Your dog's show dog tendencies are just a bonus, and if it shows discomfort or disinterest in all things that involve being a show dog, then it's probably best to just let it be a regular dog. Show dogs, just like any dog, need your love and affection.
