Spanish Trail is a guard-gated, planned neighborhood just fifteen minutes on the west of the Las Vegas Strip. It is built around a golf course and has custom and tract properties from 1,300 to 10,000 sqf and more. Often erroneously described as Spanish Trails Las Vegas, the legitimate name of the community in Spanish Trail.
Spanish Trail was a trailblazer in delivering a life-style experience for well-to-do Las Vegans, instead of just a place to live. In between Hacienda and Tropicana running east to west, and by Durango and Rainbow running north to south, this 640 acre neighborhood is like a town of its own, only without any decent shops. For a long time Spanish Trail was the premier Las Vegas address, and these days it profits from having among some of the most fully grown gardens among Vegas's planned communities. In its time it has enticed Prince Jefri of Brueni, pitcher Geoff Maddux, and Andrei Agassi (although he has now relocated to Spanish Hills).
Joe Blasco, an immigrant who came to the US at the five years old, was a Las Vegas local who made his money in mobile home parks and gravel pits. He acquired the Spanish Trail land from the Fed, probably with the intention of using it for gravel mining. However, having acquired the land in 1953 its most profitable use had evolved by 1983, when Joe Blasco decided to construct a golf-course community.
The neighborhood is named after the Old Spanish Trail - an historical which hooked up northern New Mexico with Los Angeles. The route was 1,200 miles long, and was named in John C. Freemont's Report of his 1844 journey from California to New Mexico. The name was selected to acknowledge the fact that the Spanish had known of the route since the seventeenth century.
The design of the new Spanish Trail was based on Californian housing developments and particularly Palm Springs. When the community was built it provided the first new golf links Las Vegas had in 15 years. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the 27-hole course, which cost over $ ten million and was planted with in excess of one thousand mature trees from day one. The course has 5 lakes with streams and waterfalls, 120 bunkers and amazing mountain vistas.
Amongst the notable selling points of Spanish Trail in its early days was that it was one of the only guard gated communities, and that it was further safeguarded by eight miles of wall. This has not eliminated crime, with the well-known kidnap of Steve Wynn's daughter being one high profile case, but even today it is among the securer places in Las Vegas.
The luxurious end of Las Vegas's residential developments commenced with Spanish Trail, and went onto be reproduced in many developments such as thee neighboring Spanish Hills. Spanish Trail keeps that old Vegas reputation, and its mature gardens is not easily copied. Within the community there are a number of distinct areas: Islands, Gardens, Springs, Courtyards, Carmels, Villas, Estates and Links.
