Training a dog for dog shows is much more elaborate than simply training them for disciplinary purposes. Pet owners need to keep a few things in mind during training to ensure that they will meet the standards set by the governing body or the American Kennel Club.
Obedience Training
Shows dogs must first learn about obedience considering how they will be trained a lot during the following months. It is crucial that owners first get the loyalty of their dog, ensuring that the pet will follow set instructions given. In order to do this, owners need to show their pet that they are the alpha in the group. As the leader, the chances of being followed are higher. Some of the most common aspects of obedience training include coming when called, sitting when told to, and staying silent.
Standing Still
Dog showing is mostly about the conformation of the pet. Judges will typically get close to the dog and start inspecting their body, eyes, head and teeth. It is important that during this time, the dog will be standing still, allowing the judge to touch them for inspection. This can be tough since most dogs aren't used to standing still, hence the need for extensive training. Note that not just any stand will do. It has to be "stacked" or squarely done with the legs placed in specific locations to best show the conformation of the pet. There are several ways to get this pose so make sure to be consistent with the training.
Training for Walks
Walking on a leash is a common part of dog training. In dog shows however, the dog has to move in a way that all their best features are shown for the inspection of the judge. The walk or gait is very specific - the pet has to move their right front leg and left back leg at the same time. Note that there are different terms for different dog movements - trotting, gait and pacing. The type of "walk" that should be taught to a dog depends on their breed.
Facial Expression of the Pet
The dog's face must show alertness when on a stacked position. This can be tough to do which is why some handlers make sure that they have a treat and a leash for easier control. In some cases, the pet has to look forward - focusing intently on their handler to effectively achieve the necessary facial expression. During training, use the collar to control the angle of the dog's head while providing treats every time he gets it right.
Considering the stringent regulations for shows, it isn't surprising that most of the dogs chosen belong to the most intelligent breeds such as the Great Dane, Poodle and Boxer. These breeds have an easier time picking up complicated instructions, making them very confident when out in a show. Note that this doesn't mean other dogs' couldn't be taught - with the right owner, any dog can be trained well enough for a show.
