Dog shows can be fairly complicated to judge, especially for someone who is new in the system. New dog owners might even have a problem wondering whether their pet is of the right type to be entered in shows.
What most people don't realize is that despite the different breeds competing, there are set standards for each one. The role of the judges is to find the breed that comes as close as possible to the standards set by the American Kennel Club - regardless of what breed it is. Hence, it's perfectly possible for a Great Dane to be in a show with a Poodle or Mini Pinscher with each of them having the same chances of being adjudged the winner.
For those who are thinking of turning their pet into showdogs, following are the different criteria that will determine if the canine will make an excellent show dog.
Body Conformation
Body conformation for dogs in shows depends from one breed to the next. Hence, the judges will be inspecting the dog's size and distribution of weight all over the body. The shape and muscular physique may also be examined, usually by touching the dog. The standards used are those set by the AKC breed standard which is why it is crucial for judges to have extensive information regarding the regulations in shows. The dog which most closely matches the standards set by the AKC for that particular breed gets the most points. Note that body conformation is divided into different categories such as the dog's age or their breeder.
Head, Eyes, Muzzle, Teeth and Ears
The shape of the head in relation to the body is also checked as well as the eyes, muzzle and ears. Depending on the breed, the ears may be cropped or not to match the standards set by the governing body. The color of the eyes as well as its size and setting will also be checked. As for the muzzle, the main concern would be its shape and length.
Coat and Color
The texture and length of the coat will also be judged, especially for dog breeds that require elaborate grooming such as the Poodle or the Pomeranian. Again, the judge will not hesitate in touching the breed to ascertain that it meets the standards. Note that even the colors have an accepted list, again depending on the breed of the pet.
Intelligence
Most shows also have a portion where the pet gets to show off their intelligence. This is one of the most entertaining parts of the contest and provides judges with ample information regarding the pet's agility and confidence.
Of course, those aren't the only considerations judges use when judging show dogs. Abstract characteristics such as alertness and confidence are also part of the standard traits that necessitate subjective judging. This is why dog showing judges make the effort of working with numerous dogs before being part of a show.
In most cases, canines are allowed to compete within their specific breeds to ascertain that they are the best out of all the types. The winner gets to be the breed's representative for the prestigious Westminster competition where the pet will be competing with others who have won in their breed category.
