Dog shows are always a delight to watch with beautiful dogs that have been trained perfectly by their owners. These pets are being chosen based on a number of characteristics ranging from their body conformation to their intelligence. Due to these requirements, it isn't surprising that some show dogs lean towards specific breeds that are more likely to meet the said standards. For those who are currently thinking about entering their dog for a show, following are the most popular breeds that are specifically entered in shows.
Standard Poodle
Poodles are very common in shows mostly because of their intelligence. They are very easy to teach and can therefore perform different tricks when on a show. Their body conformation is also impressive with a regal bearing. Add to that, the Poodle's coat is very eye-catching and allows for various designs on the part of the owner. Coats come in all possible solid colors such as full black, white, brown, apricot and even red.
Doberman Pinscher
The Doberman Pinscher is a medium sized dog with a very striking appearance. Squarely built, they have a muscular body with coats that vary in color from black to brown. What really makes them stand out, however, is their intelligence - making them one of the easiest breeds to teach. Docile, loyal and used to human interaction, they will do well in crowded places. The Miniature Pinscher is also a common sight in shows today.
Great Danes
Great Danes are amazing breeds with patience and intelligence worthy of an adult. It is often called the Gentle Giant which is why it is deemed a favorite in shows. Dog training the Great Dane is fairly easy as it has an innate need to please its master. Their size is an eye-catcher in itself but with good conformation, Great Danes definitely take home the red ribbon more often than not. They have long and square bodies with perfectly straight front legs. Most owners crop the ears of the dog although this is considered illegal in Europe.
Golden Retriever
Definitely one of the most loved breeds in and out of shows, the Golden Retriever is one of the friendliest canines today. They are well-mannered dogs with great patience for children. Their high energy combined with a healthy sense of docility makes them excellent companions in dog showing. The level of intelligence found in Golden Retriever is exceptional, allowing the patient owner to teach them even uncommon behavior.
Boxer
Not all people are fond of Boxers but these dogs are definitely more than they look. Compact and muscular with a very powerful head and body, Boxers may look mean but are actually kind and obedient animals. In fact, they are often chosen as family dogs. In shows, the Boxer is a definite eye catcher thanks to its excellent reputation. Intelligent, they can also be taught more than the usual tricks.
Note that although those are the most popularly seen breeds, nothing stops owners from entering other types of dogs. As long as they meet the criteria set by the show, dog owners can enter any breed they wish - and win.
