About twelve months after a her last menstrual cycle, which occurs somewhere around 50 years old, a woman's ability to conceive ends. This is the stage in her life called menopause. Beginning at about 45 years old, she may experience some body changes caused by her ovaries slowing down in the production of the hormones, progesterone and estrogen. It then becomes necessary for her to be aware of the menopause symptoms. This is all a part of a natural biological process, but can carry with it some annoying symptoms.
A common symptom is hot flashes where a woman's body feels warmth that goes through her upper body. She will perspire yet feel cold at the same time. She may turn on the air conditioner only to turn it off soon after. There are women who experience night sweats where they will wake up perspiring while there are others who experience hot flashes periodically all day.
Another menopause symptom is sleep disorder which may start 5 to 7 years prior to menopause. She may wake up a couple of times or even continuously during the night. This can make her feel irritable, haggard and exhausted the following day.
During menopause, the lining of the vagina thins and can cause vaginal dryness. This makes sexual intercourse painful.
Irregular menstrual periods are common during early menopause. There are women who experience a shorter cycle while others go through a lengthy cycle. Some women have a lighter than normal flow, others experience a heavier one. This usually starts when a woman enters her mid-forties.
Often women undergo less noticeable changes prior to menopause. These may include hair thinning or loss because they produce less estrogen and hair follicles need this hormone. Lower estrogen also leads to severe exhaustion, lack of concentration and memory loss. Women forget a person's name, title of a song they know so well or an appointment they have set.
During menopause, women may gain weight because their metabolism slows down. Because of this, they may feel frustrated when their weight does not shed off as easily as before.
Although menopause can never be skipped in a woman's life, menopause symptoms can be relieved. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is available to replace the hormones estrogen and progesterone in her body. It will safeguard the body from osteoporosis because a post-menopause symptom is bone density loss. Many people do not choose HRT because of the risks it brings so they select a more natural approach, such as bio identical hormones are derived from plants and are reportedly identical to the hormones we naturally produce.
A diet rich in soy is believed to relieve hot flashes. Herbs such as St. John's Wort relieve mood swings and depression, Black Cohosh to combat night sweats and ginseng and evening primrose to address other symptoms. An active physical lifestyle is also said relieve hot flashes.
Knowing and addressing these menopause symptoms is necessary because this is a stage in a woman's life that can make her feel afraid, insecure, sad and depressed.
