Female menopause is a known and accepted reality because of the many literature written about it. These days, men have accepted the male counterpart of this condition known as andropause. It was back in the 1940s when this condition has been known but it is only in these modern times when it has been openly discussed. It usually happens to a man aged 40 to 50 years old but there are those that gradually experience its starting phase at 30 years old. It has various causes which this article shall relay.
One of the basic causes of andropause is aging. As a man ages, there are changes in his body that occur. Some of the symptoms he experiences are the same as that of those experienced by women reaching their menopausal age. His body slows down, becomes exhausted and irritable and his sexual performance lessens . He will also be at risk for weak bones and heart disease which women go through due to the loss of their estrogen, a vital hormone.
When a man grows older, starting at 40 years old, he will begin losing his essential hormone known as testosterone. He gradually loses this when he reaches 40 to 55 years old. Due to the slow loss, he may not be aware of the slight body changes he is undergoing. It is said that the blood's testosterone levels steadily declines at 1% per year after reaching 40 years old.
When a man turns 30 years old where he attains his sexual height, something strange happens . His SBHG or Sex Binding Hormone Globulin heightens during this age trapping most of his testosterone which is flowing in his body. The hormone therefore fails to put forth the effects on his male body. The rest of the hormone left does all the essential work and this is referred to as bioavailable testosterone. What this is actually saying is that testosterone decreases earlier than expected.
Once the body of a man begins to lose testosterone to keep him healthy, andropause occurs. The change in his body leads to body-altering factors such as aging, loss of body and muscle mass, heart problems, weak bones and sexual problems. He becomes tenser which he is not aware of and will get less sleep. His testosterone level shall drop at 10% every ten years until he enters his eighties.
To cope with andropause, a man should visit his doctor for a complete medical checkup and tests. He should ask copies of his records for him to be aware and updated about his health. He should also have regular physical workouts, such as weight lifting and cardiovascular exercises, and a healthy and balanced diet so that he stays strong, lean and supple. This will strengthen his bones, keep him muscular and heighten testosterone levels.
Aside from focusing on his physical health, an adropausal man should also go to counselling sessions so as to know the positive and negative factors of aging. If he is married, he should also take his wife to these sessions so that he can count on her support.
Being educated about andropause will enable a man to deal with it effectively.
