If you want to design flags successfully, you should study the science of Vexillology. Vexillology is defined as the study of the symbolism, history and usage of flags. If you are designing a flag for your institution, you should familiarize yourself with the five principles of flag design as defined under the discipline, since this will make the resulting flag more effective. These principles are as follows:
Keep the design simple. If you design flags, then you should know that a more straightforward design is more effective. One good example is the flag of Alaska, which features yellow stars formed into the constellation the Big Dipper, as well as the North Star, which are set against a navy blue background. Another example is the flag of Japan, which is simply a red disk against a white backdrop, with the disk intended to symbolize the rising sun. An example of a bad flag design is the flag of West Virginia, which features the state seal, a complicated design, against a white background, which in turn is surrounded by a blue border.
Use symbols that are meaningful. One example of a flag that features noteworthy symbolism is that of France, which simply features three bars of blue, white and red. The blue and red are said to be the colors of the French capital, Paris, and are separated by the white band, which is a Royal color. On the other hand, the flag of Libya, which simply consists of a green field, is considered a poor design. Although the green color is intended to symbolize Islam, it is too simple to effectively represent the country.
Use no more than two or three basic colors. The fundamental colors are red, blue, white, black, green and yellow, although you can use other colors such as orange or grey when you design flags. When using these colors, make sure that you split up dark areas with light colors. One good example of this design idea is the flag of the Dominican Republic, which consists of red and blue areas separated by a white cross. A flag that disregards this design principle is that of Dominica, which uses all of the basic colors and adds a complicated design in the middle to boot.
Create a flag that has a distinctive design, even if it is related to another flag. One good example is the flag of Liberia, which resembles the US flag with its white and red horizontal bands and blue field on the corner. What makes the Liberian flag distinctive, however, is that the blue field features a lone white star, rather than the fifty stars of the American flag. A bad example is the Indonesian flag, which looks exactly like the flag of Monaco, even though there is nothing that links the two countries.
Avoid putting in lettering or seals. Why bother incorporating these elements when you design flags since they can t be easily seen by people from a distance? An example of a flag that violates this design principle is South Dakota, which includes the words South Dakota the Mount Rushmore State around the state seal. These elements can t be clearly made out from far away.
