Marijuana addiction is undeniably one of the most serious problems in the US, according to 2011 data from the SAMSHA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). According to the SAMSHA report, marijuana, which was abused by some 4.2 million people, had the highest dependence rates in 2011. Unfortunately, quitting is difficult. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, success rates for quitting marijuana are low, with only around half of those who enroll in treatment programs achieving two weeks of abstinence from the drug. Of these, half will relapse and start using again within the following year. And unlike other drugs, there are currently no drugs for treating dependence on marijuana.
Here are some of the treatment options for marijuana addiction:
Counseling. Since addiction to cannabis seems to be mainly psychological, counseling could be one of the most successful ways for breaking dependence on cannabis. The main approach taken in counseling is cognitive behavior therapy, which focuses on teaching patients to understand the feelings and thoughts that influence certain behaviors so that they can deal with them in a positive manner. For example, a typical CBT treatment might seek to identify the factors which trigger marijuana use in the dependent so that they can learn how to avoid them.
Brief marijuana dependence counseling. This counseling approach involves a ten week program for helping people who want to quit but may not yet have fully accepted the fact that they are addicted to cannabis and believe they can stop using at any time. In the first stages of the program, the addict is not required to stop using marijuana while the extent of their addiction is assessed and their case examined thoroughly. They are then taught skills on how to cope with stressors that lead to marijuana use while being weaned off the drug. Once they have stopped using, the patient is supervised to ensure that they do not backslide. Therapists also encourage users to take responsibility for their choices in order to empower them and strengthen their resolve to quit permanently.
Support groups. These groups are intended to provide support for users who have already successfully quit and need help to stay clean. Many of these groups take the psycho-educational approach, which uses structured group discussions about the effects of marijuana addiction and solutions to breaking the cycle of addiction. In particular, the groups encourage an individualized approach towards remaining sober rather than a one-size fits all method.
Self-help methods. Cannabis addicts can choose to help themselves by adopting many of the approaches that nicotine addicts have taken to help them quit smoking. For example, if they are recreational weed users, they can avoid hanging around places where other marijuana addicts gather to avoid temptation. Or they can use substitutes to keep their minds away from using marijuana, including chewing gum, toothpicks, hard candy or cinnamon sticks.
It should be noted that a combination of two or more of these approaches can be used to increase the effectiveness of treatment for marijuana addiction.
