What are your opinions on gun control in our country in light of the Second Amendment of our Constitution? I am interested to hear your thoughts in light of the speech by President Obama today and the recent tragedy in Newtown at Sandy Hook Elementary School. One of the reasons I believe we are so great as a nation is our freedom to discuss just about anything in public in debate – and in the end even agree to disagree.
I am curious of your opinions and what you think should be done, if anything. Gun Control is a clearly divisive topic – with great passion on both sides of the debate. In light of some of the recent tragedies we have been through as a nation including Newtown, Columbine, Virginia Tech , and the Aurora Movie Theater Shootings, I think it is time to address the topic of gun control and open the debate – talk about the Second Amendment and have an open bipartisan, and public discussion with President Obama and our legislators as citizens.
President Obama and our legislators need to follow the will of the people and address our concerns.
I think we can all agree – no matter how much gun control we have, and as President Obama stated in his speech today, we will not be able to completely stop incidents from occurring, but we may be able to decrease some of them. So how do we create gun control laws that do not eat away at on our Second Amendment rights and still stop another Newtown, Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy?
President Obama in His Speech Today – We Need an Open Debate on the Second Amendment and Gun Control in Light of Newtown and Other Tragedies
I will start the discussion by saying – I am a gun owner. I did not grow up with guns and I had never owned a gun until the last few years. I did what a self disciplined person should do – before I bought my first gun I paid a gun safety trainer to come to my home to teach me and my wife theory and how to safely handle/care for a firearm. Then the gun safety expert took us to the range to teach us hands on gun safety while firing a live firearm. It only cost $300 and it was right and responsible thing to do. My wife and I were the only people residing in our home – no children – so we both were trained on gun safety and we both went to the range for training with a live firearm.
After this responsible safety and handling training, I bought my first gun. I was out of the store within 15 minutes after the FBI background check – with a gun and bullets. I was shocked it was so easy. I strongly believe in the Second Amendment and our right to own firearms, but I will say it is incredulous to me in today's world that no mandatory safety or handling course is needed in order to buy a firearm. With respect to gun control, the committee President Obama just formed to discuss/debate this topic, and Newtown among other recent tragedies – this is just plain unconscionable to me.
You need a license and training to operate a motor vehicle, yet you do not need any license or any training to own a gun. Aren't guns potentially more dangerous than a motor vehicle – especially in the wrong hands?
We Need Mandatory Gun Safety Training for Gun Control and to Keep Our Second Amendment Rights in Light of Newtown and Other Tragedies
So this is where I would like to start the debate on gun control, gun ownership, President Obama with his speech today, the Second Amendment, and the recent tragedy in Newtown. I feel there should be mandatory gun safety training and an actual license that needs to be updated from time to time with more mandatory gun safety training in order to own or purchase a gun. What are your thoughts? Go to my web site and comment.
I am a responsible gun owner who sought out his own gun safety training PRIOR to purchasing or owning a gun – for all members of my home that would have access to the gun. In a sense, my own form of self regulated self regulated gun control.
I do not think it is too much to ask to have mandatory gun safety training and a license to buy or own a gun – just like we do to drive a motor vehicle.
Any gun safety course can certainly have a portion devoted to how to store guns and keep them out of the hands of children or others who may have bad intentions.
As for gun control – having a true safety course and license procedure as well as renewal procedure could incorporate the instructor's right to fail someone based upon their personal assessment. With one on one instruction we may be able to prevent some people who should not own a gun from owning a gun. We do need to be careful to prevent abuse of this proposed process – maintain our Second Amendment rights, have the right kind of gun control, as well as the ability to prevent or decrease the incidence of another Newtown. This is my message to President Obama. One gun instructor should not be allowed allowed to issue gun control based upon their opinion – so an appeal process for failure with other non interested non interested parties should be part of that process. What are your thoughts? Go to my web site and comment.
Gun control like this will not necessarily stop a future Newtown incident , but it may help decrease such incidents in the future. I am all for a committee by President Obama to debate what we can do to be more responsible with guns as a nation and prevent any Newtown like future tragedies. I do not wish an infringement on our Second Amendment rights, but I do feel anyone who owns a gun – including me – should have a mandatory safety course every so often and a license to own a gun.
Let's face it – any measures of gun control, any new laws passed by President Obama, and any debate or controversy over our Second Amendment rights will not prevent all future tragedies. Bad people will still manage to get guns – but maybe we can make us all more responsible as a society to prevent some future tragedies. Isn't this worth it - even to prevent one more Newtown, Sandy Elementary school event?
