This may be a difficult question to answer because children are different. This means that one parenting style may be effective to one child but not to others. When it comes to parenting, there are no hard and fast rules that parents can follow. Most of the time, they have to use their instinct to raise their kids the right way. After all, ancient parents did not have self-help books and parenting techniques to guide them on how to raise their kids. They just follow their guts and what they think is right for their young ones. However, there are some simple tips, not really rules, which can help you become a better parent to your kids. Be a role model

If you want your child to do what you tell him to do, you have to do it yourself as well. For example, if you are teaching your child the bad effects of smoking but he always sees you lighting a cigarette, he will surely question what you are saying. For the younger children, if you are teaching them how to be respectful and polite by saying please and thank you, you should also use these phrases when you are speaking to them.

Give your kids their basic needs

One of the most basic responsibilities of parents is to give their kids their basic needs which include food, clothing, and shelter. These are the things that they need to live. As they grow older, they will have other needs, like education. It is important that adults have the capacity to provide these needs to their kids before they even consider about starting a family.

Show love and affection

If you want your child to feel loved, you should show love and affection by cuddling, hugging, and saying 'I love you'. These simple gestures mean a lot to your kids. A smile of approval when they did something right, gentle pat on the back for a job well done, and a simple hug when they are feeling down has a long term effect on children. You need to love them unconditionally, not only when they are doing well in school and not only when they make you feel proud. You are their parents, after all.

Praise your kids

Praise your child if they did something correctly, like tying their shoelaces for the first time or being able to use a fork and a spoon properly. Be generous with praise. Never compare your child to other kids especially their brothers and sisters if you want to avoid sibling rivalry and resentment. Remember that kids are different in their own way. You should also set realistic expectations. Do not be a perfectionist. It would surely be nice for your child to be the best in his class and to always get perfect scores in his exams. But if not, you should still praise him with his achievements, no matter how small they are.

Be consistent

If you have rules for your kids, you have to be consistent in enforcing them. This is why it is important to talk with your partner about how you are going to discipline your child. You should show unity and not bicker in front of your child on what is best for him. This will only confuse the child more. Being consistent also means that one rule should apply to all your children, not only to one. Just because the eldest always gets high grades does not mean he can watch TV at night. This will only make your other kids resent the oldest and may create rivalry between them.
