We have been coming back again to Maui now for nearly 20 years and decided to give a brand-new resort, the Honua Kai Resort, a crack. We did some researching and made a reservation for our 2BR Ocean view apartment via the highly proficient Maui Resort Realty company (more concerning them later on).
To be truthful, our 1st impression of Honua Kai Resort was not the greatest: we were not particularly knowledgeable about the hotel's North Kaanapali beach front area and when we pulled up to the porte cochere outside the lobby, I felt underwhelmed by the more or less nondescript resort entryway and bordering landscaping. We were immediately welcomed by the management company representative and entered the lobby for overview of the . Upon entering the hotel my worry diffused; the lobby area and courtyard were some of the most aesthetically pleasing hotel focus points I had seen throughout my years going over to Hawaii.
With a sense of expectancy we accompanied the agent up to our suite. The unit was current however maintained a very Hawaiian feel and I could not identify any flaw. The viewpoints were excellent; the ocean off in the distance with the swimming pool areas in the foreground. The young man showed us around the condo and did a great job making us feel at ease, letting us know to call him at any time if we wished assistance.
I remember reading somewhere that the name Honua Kai is Hawaiian for Land and Ocean; after taking a walk on this large, beach front property (38 acres) I felt that the hotel's title was carefully picked. Huge belts of green grass, dunes and coastline gave a sense of openness to the resort area unusual in lots of common Hawaiian beachfront hotels.
Amenities:
I will mostly focus on which components of the property my family took pleasure in the most:
Mom loved the multiple physical fitness centers situated in both the Konea and Hokulani towers. She appreciated having her morning workout routine before beginning the day.
I indulged in expansive pool attributes, which probably encompassed at least 3 or 4 acres sandwiched by the beach and hotel. I enjoyed alternating between going swimming and body boarding in the sea, showering off and taking a dip in the swimming pool or loosening up in the Jacuzzi.
The youngsters truly appreciated buying goodies from the Aina market place, swimming pool areas, water slides and, of course, being able to hang out with other kids their ages (we went at the time of Spring Break).
A few further insights:
The Honua Kai Resort property has every thing for everybody and IMHO was a really great vacation trip.
There is a fantastic strolling path in front of Honua Kai Hotel that takes you to the famous Blackrock point in front of the Sheraton hotel and back past the Royal Lahaina resort and Westin Kaanapali Sea resort. I really appreciated the possibility to experience the North side of Black rock; while a little quieter, it was in many ways a much more marvelous setting then the South Kaanapali coastline location. Snorkeling is fantastic in front of the resort-- however, be careful, I would suggest entering the water 75 yards to the south of the resort to prevent the coral.
Pros and Cons:
Pros
Family friendly
Villas are newly built and also beautifully appointed
Beautiful grounds, swimming pool areas and relaxed setting
Management company was really responsive relating to the few problems we had in the unit (some appliance quick fix issues)
Friendly staff
Cons
Market was great however expensive for what they offered
The area behind resort is not that beautiful-- the hotel is across the street from a business center (although can't complain about the views of West Maui Mountains)
I would have liked to see the health spa open-- the Honua Kai resort and spa is the recognized title and allegedly it will open up soon.
Overall impression:
Despite a couple of small detracting issues, the Honua Kai Resort challenges the Marriott's Maui Ocean club for best resort features, and rooms are in a class by themselves.
I would strongly advise working with Mauiresortrealty.com for booking the Honua Kai-- their rates are notably better than the ones offered directly from the resort and their service was exceptional from beginning to end.
