Honua Kai Resort & Spa

We have been coming back again to Maui now for more than and chose to give a new resort, the Honua Kai Resort, a try. We did some legwork and made a reservation for our 2BR Ocean view suite from the truly dependable Maui Resort Realty team (more about them later).

In all honesty, our original impression of Honua Kai Resort was not the very best: we were not very acquainted with the resort's North Kaanapali beach location and when we pulled up to the porte cochere outside the lobby, I felt underwhelmed by the more or less uninteresting resort access as well as bordering landscape. We were quickly ushered in by the management company representative and came into the lobby for introduction of the . Upon entering the hotel my uneasiness dissappated; the lobby area and were several of the most aesthetically pleasing resort focus points I had seen in the course of my years frequenting Hawaii.

With a feeling of expectancy we followed the representative up to our unit. The suite was contemporary however kept a truly Hawaiian feel and I could not identify any type of fault. The vistas were superb; the sea off in the distance with the swimming pool areas in the foreground. The young man showed us around the villa and did a terrific job making us feel comfortable, letting us know to contact him at any time if we needed assistance.

I recall reading someplace that the title Honua Kai is Hawaiian for Land and Sea; after taking a saunter on this huge, coastline front estate (38 acres) I appreciated that the hotel's title was wisely picked. Sizeable belts of green grass, dunes and beach front lent a feeling of openness to the resort rare in many typical Hawaiian beachfront resorts.

Amenities:

I will primarily concentrate on which attributes of the property my family members enjoyed the most:

Mom liked the several fitness centers found in both the Konea and Hokulani towers. She enjoyed having her early morning work out routine prior to beginning the day.
I appreciated extensive swimming pool attributes, which undoubtedly covered up at the very least 3 or 4 acres sandwiched by the coastline and hotel. I loved alternating in between going swimming and body boarding in the ocean, showering off and swimming in the pool or sitting back in the Jacuzzi.
The kids truly delighted in buying goodies from the Aina market place, pool spots, water slides and, of course, being able to socialize with various other kids their ages (we went during Spring Break).
A couple of additional insights:

The Honua Kai Resort property has every thing for every person and IMHO was a truly wonderful holiday experience.

There is a terrific walking path in front of Honua Kai Hotel that takes you to the renowned Blackrock point in front of the Sheraton hotel and back past the Royal Lahaina resort and Westin Kaanapali Ocean hotel. I truly appreciated the possibility to experience the North side of Black rock; while a bit quieter, it was in many ways an even more impressive setting then the South Kaanapali beach region. Snorkeling is excellent in front of the resort-- but, be careful, I would certainly recommend getting in the water 75 yards to the south of the resort to avoid the coral.

Pros

Family friendly
Villas are newly constructed as well as beautifully designated
Attractive grounds, swimming pool areas and relaxed setting
Management company was very responsive concerning the few issues we had in the unit (some appliance quick fix concerns)
Friendly staff

Cons

Market was terrific but costly for what they provided
The area behind resort is not that beautiful-- the resort is across the street from a business facility (although can't complain about the views of West Maui Mountains)
I would certainly have liked to see the health spa open-- the Honua Kai resort and spa is the official title and supposedly it will open soon.
Overall impression:

Despite a couple of small detracting problems, the Honua Kai Resort challenges the Marriott's Maui Ocean club for very best resort features, and rooms are in a class on their own.
I would strongly advise working with Mauiresortrealty.com for booking the Honua Kai-- their rates are much better compared to the ones offered directly from the hotel and their service was excellent from beginning to finish.
