Buy Guitar? Check. Keen To Learn? Check. Now what? Believe it or not, most people who are just starting out with guitar already have all the ingredients at their disposal to ensure that they make it really, really far with their playing. Everything, that is, except one vital element.
Read that first paragraph again carefully and then think about this: I don't care who you are, or what your background is, if you have a strong desire to learn guitar (or anything else, for that matter) you can do it.
As you will soon see, there is only one thing holding you back from attaining your playing dreams. But firstly, let me ask you this - what do you think it is that separates you from those who have already reached a level of guitar mastery? Is it:
a) Equipment? No, it's not equipment. I can almost guarantee that your favourite guitar player started out on a fairly average guitar. This is a trap that a lot of people fall into, because they think, 'if only I can just get that guitar, or that pedal, or that amp, I'll be able to play better.'
This is commonly known as GAS - Gear Aquisition Syndrome. Your equipment will never make you a better player.
b) Opportunity? While it is true that some people seem to have things handed to them on a silver platter, the best guitar players had to fight for it. You have the same opportunity as everyone else, because those who want it enough, make their own opportunity. Don't use lack of opportunity as your excuse.
c) Talent? Fair enough, those who are at the top of their game possess some degree of talent. But there are also many guitarists who are equally as talented, if not more talented than many musicians who are in the spotlight, and they are sitting playing in their bedrooms day after day.
Listen, all this is hypothetical, so I'm just going to come straight out and tell you the number one reason why some guitarists succeed, while others fail. If you have a desire to play guitar, and you get this one thing right, there will be no obstacle, no setback, no set of circumstances that can hold you back.
And the one thing is this: Know What You Want.
What? Is that it? Is that the big revelation? Yup. This is the one thing that you should get right before you look for a teacher, before you go out and buy all those books or DVDs, before you even buy a guitar - you have to make up your mind what you really want out of your playing.
Those who succeed at guitar do so because they first know what they want and they stuck to their guns, while those who fail do so because they are drifting on a sea of maybes, being blown here and there by every wind they encounter.
Don't be distracted by the thousands of voices shouting at you from every direction, telling you, 'do this, do that'. Someone else's dream is not necessarily your dream.
Hear what I'm saying, because it is backed by many, many years of cold, hard experience: Know What You Want.
Here's what I recommend you do: take out a sheet of paper and dream a little. When you see yourself playing guitar, what context are you doing it in? Don't write down what you think the answer should be, be honest with yourself. Why do you want to play the guitar? The more specific you are, the better.
Is it your goal to:
Accompany the kids that you teach at the next school recital?
Form a Reggae band, just for kicks?
Play rhythm guitar in your worship team at church?
Learn blistering rock solos so you can be a lead guitarist in a famous band?
Use the guitar to put music to the poetry you've been writing?
Once you've formed a definite purpose, write it down. I promise you that the best intentions in the world will get you nowhere, unless you have a very definite purpose.
This is the best way to learn guitar. Once you know this, the rest will fall into place. The right opportunities will present themselves, you will find the right teacher, you will buy the right equipment, and you will learn what you need to learn, because You Know What You Want.
