To put it simply, Six Sigma is a business management strategy that aims to make everything run efficiently. The whole approach and goal behind Six Sigma is to reduce the amount of errors within a system to less than one percent. Six Sigma has been successfully implemented by many big international companies from all kinds of industries. To use Six Sigma, a company would need a team of professionals who are especially trained in its methodologies and the use of the different tools that is required.
What Is Six Sigma Used For?
As mentioned earlier, Six Sigma is used to minimize, maybe even completely eliminate the chances of errors in manufacturing. As Six Sigma has developed, it is increasingly being used in all aspects of business, including sales and human resources. The methodology is first used to identify issues within a 'system', which once identified can be eliminated. If Six Sigma is effectively implemented, it will result in the company greatly lowering its operating costs and increase in sales.
Six Sigma Certification Levels
Six Sigma professionals are divided into different ranks, or 'belts', in accordance to the level of skill and training that they have. At the very bottom are the Yellow Belts, they are professionals who have basic knowledge about Six Sigma. Yellow belts are basically able to take part in projects such as data gathering but nothing else.
The next rank in Six Sigma are the Green Belts. These professionals are not exclusively tasked with Six Sigma projects, they usually have other responsibilities within their company. These are considered as "entry level" Six Sigma professionals because they are already certified and allowed to participate in, and sometimes even lead Six Sigma research and implementation.
Following the Green Belts are the Black Belts. These are fully certified Six Sigma professionals who have demonstrated competence in all of its methodologies and tools. Black Belts are always tasked to lead a team, sometimes even multiple teams of Green and Yellow Belts, and also overview the implementation of the solutions that they come up with. Black Belts also have the task of training lower ranked professionals in the intricacies of Six Sigma.
The final and ultimate certification is the Master Black Belt. These professionals can implement all of the Six Sigma methodologies in all levels of management in the company; they usually work in closely with the CEO during the implementation process. Their certification means that they monitor and supervise other Black belts and can also deliver training to lower levels if necessary.
In Closing...
Analyzing the many different kinds of data and figures to find out the best possible solution to eliminate most of the errors in manufacturing. Six Sigma has been used by many of the top companies in the world and this is because it has been proven to deliver results.
