In advance of setting out on our voyage, maybe I should have taken some time evaluating airline appraisals. Maybe then I might have been psychologically prepared for our air travel!
Would Airline Reviews have grasped the awful reality of the cost reducing measures?
My loved ones and I just arrived in Hawaii yesterdat from Calgary, Canada. I am happy to be here, but the flight over here was a real eye opener ... here's my unique airline reviews just in the event any one of you reading this have not travelled by air for some time ...
The previous time we flew was from Calgary to New Zealand in 2010. The flight back then was long, but beyond that, no real grievances. We had pleasant service, food, bags checked free of charge ... then again, we were on Air New Zealand, so that may be the difference.
Personal Airline Critiques - Air Canada and United Airlines
Our plane trip last night from Calgary to Maui was on two different airlines. First, we flew on Air Canada from Calgary to L.A. Second, we flew from L.A. to Maui on United Airlines
. Airline Reviews - Air Canada We were a little pissed off initially. When we originally organized our tickets with Air Canada months ago, we received a direct flight from Calgary to Maui. This would most likely have meant roughly 13 hours of overall travel time (including arriving at the airport 3 hours before flight).
Then, Air Canada, for some inexplicable reason, just went and eliminated our direct flight about a month before our flight. No purpose given, no apology, just an email to say our flight was eradicated - we could now leave the next day instead.
Leaving the next day didn't work - we 'd already shelled out money for our holiday accommodation - thus the change from direct flight to the stop over in L.A.
The change in flight plans ended up meaning that the full travel time from our starting point in Calgary to the Maui terminal ended up being 17 1/2 hours - this 4 1/2 hour difference is significant if you have a 4 and 6 year old in tow.
We reached the Calgary Flight terminal 3 hours ahead of our flight. It took us over an hour to get through the customs line. This has nothing to do with the Airlines, and unfortunately, is just something we now have to cope with in this day and age.
Nonetheless, checking in was the initial sign of the so called 'cost cutting measures'. We were quite ready, as we did see it on the schedule, but still it was a revelation - we needed to pay $ 25 for each and every checked suitcase. Luckily, between the 4 of us, we only had 2. Still - that's $ 50 each direction!
Apparently this is to pay for the transit in L.A. And so, Air Canada - since we initially booked a direct flight, which you altered, does this mean you'll pay us back this 100 ??!
The flight itself was fine. The flight attendants were very amiable, which was a delightful improvement. The concealed expenses though were in the meals. Although the flight was approximately 3 1/2 hours - there is without a doubt no food provided in the price of your ticket. Back in the day, even a 1 hour flight would have included a package of peanuts (peanuts are no longer allowed anyway - thanks to the tremendously high abundance of people allergic to peanuts - hope you read the sarcasm here in this last part).
Rather, now you must pay for all food. We went the healthy road and order Twizzlers, chocolate bar and a fruit tray (so small, almost none existent). This cost us $ 15. Oh - and then there were the ear buds for the girls so they could view the on flight entertainment - that was an additional $ 6.50.
So, simply the 3 1/2 hour journey to L.A. on Air Canada ended up mounting up us an additional $ 71.50. Oh, and then there was the meal at the cafe in the L.A. Terminal - $ 32 for a salad and pizza and a beer. That I will include on Air Canada's tally - we only needed to eat there because they revoked the direct flight. Air Canada's sum total, then, is $ 103.50, one way.
At the very least we had the personal tv consoles - that maintained the little ones amused for the entire flight, so that was worth a great deal. Thanks a lots Air Canada for that at any rate!
Airline Reviews - United Airlines After traveling from one point of the airport to the other and lingering for 4 1/2 hours, we boarded the United Airlines flight.
The United Airlines airplane that we were on was antiquated. There were no personal tv consoles. Actually, there was just the occasional 1980's tv type display in the middle of the aisle. This was the way it used to be ... you view what they put on - no choice. That's ok. Not the very best for kids, but hey, can't complain about that too much.
The flight from L.A. to Maui was 5 1/2 hours - I would have thought that would most certainly entitle you to an entree gratis. I was wrong ... another square meal of a cheese plate (okay - inned comparison to the Air Canada fruit plate), a 'Classic Snack Box' (mini pepperoni sticks, cheese and cracker spread, mini Oreo cookies, Skittles and Fish Crackers) and a 'Tapas Snack Box' (olives, cheese spread and crackers, 8 chocolate covered acai berries, hummus and pita crackers). This cost us $ 24. In reality, the snacks weren't bad, but still, not included, which is my grievance!
Airline Reviews - Conclusion
So, all in all the cost reducing measures of Air Canada and United Airlines wound up costing us more or less a further $ 130 one way. We haven't shelled out for our meals or checked bags heading back yet, either.
I miss the previous times of airline travel It used to be exciting. I know a number of individuals complained about airline food, but I always found it exciting - you never knew what you 'd get - and they 'd often base the food around the country of the airline. I know my preferred food was undoubtedly on Quantas back in the day.
Now a days, with the tension of getting though customs, paying all the excess costs and getting from point A to point B in transit, air travel is just not what it used to be. I miss it.
Yet in the future - I'll do it over and over for fantastic retreats to Hawaii and the like! Next time I'll just be psychologically geared up - I'll read the airline reviews for modification to the new incorporated cost of travel.
Now on to the Vacation !!
