It seems we have seen both the best and the worst of New York City and New Yorkers in the last couple weeks. First, a New York City police officer just through the kindness of his heart helped a bare foot homeless man by buying him some socks and boots. Then we hear a tragic horrible story of a 58 year old man randomly killed by a subway after a subway pusher throws him on the tracks of an oncoming subway.
I grew upon Long Island, in a small village an hour train ride from New York City. The news in New York City was more about the worst than it was the best back in the 70′s and 80′s. Unfortunately, it was every day on the news to hear about a subway pusher. Whenever we went into New York City, my parents, always fearingthe worst and never talking to us about the best, would warn us to stay as far back from the subway tracks as possible for fear of a subway pusher – it was that common unfortunately.
We would arrive in Penn Station from takingthe Long Island Railroad in Long Island and see so much graffiti and filth. A homeless man would be on the platform in Penn Station peeing on the walls – I saw this many times growing up.
I had hoped the days of seeing the worst in New York City were over and it was time for the best. There were two mayors who did wonders for New York City – getting rid of the much of the worst and bringing out the best – they did it by force. Ed Koch and Rudy Guiliani put more police officers on the streets of New York City, the homeless were helped out of the train and subway stations, the filth filth was cleaned, the graffiti was washed off, and the subway pushers seemed to go away.
Best and Worst of New York City – Homeless Man Helped and Subway Pusher
I much prefer to hear about the best of New York City – I was fortunate to live so close – to be able to come for the best and leavethe city at night to retire to suburbia and miss the worst. Every year my elementary school would travel to New York City to go to the Museum of Natural History and the attached Hayden Planetarium. With school we saw Governor's Island (now sold and private property), the Statue of Liberty, and experienced the Arts such as "Romeo and Juliet" at the Metropolitan Opera – one of the finest in the world. This is the best of New York City – all the amazing cultural events, museums, great landmarks, and the arts.
I know many New Yorkers would tell me I am not a true New Yorker...growing up in Long Island – I have seen the best of New York City and I had hoped its worst days were behind it.
Stories like Homeless Man Helped by New York City Police Officer have become quite common place in New York City – much different than the worst of times in the 70′s and 80′s.
Best and Worst of New York City – Homeless Man Helped and Subway Pusher
It is truly horrifying to me to see another Subway Pusher in New York City – a man that other people saw knocked into the path of an oncoming subway and no one helped him. Has New York City once again become a place where a stranger will not help? If someone had helped him – this man would still be alive. This is truly the worst of New York City I have seen in a long time. I hope it never returns to the worst of the '70′s and '80′s.
Not another New York City Subway Pusher - just like when I was growing up – terrible. I hope this is the last we ever hear of such atrocities and a New York City where a stranger will not be helped.
