Using political cartoons in the classroom isn't a new idea; teachers have been doing it for decades. It's interesting to note that with the proliferation of the Internet there are more sources for political cartoons than there were just a few years ago. Not only do many mainstream media sites feature the latest political cartoons, increasingly blogger sites and indie sites are the source for some of the best political cartoons. The old saying 'Many a truth is told in jest' often applies to political cartoons. Teachers can help students learn about their country and the world by studying the viewpoints contained in political cartoons.
Elections are famous topics for political cartoons. Sometimes all the election coverage can seem very serious. Teachers can show kids that there is humor even in situations that are important to the country. When young children are first learning about the political process, they can look at funny political cartoons lampooning the candidates. Few teaching aids elicit more student questions than do political cartoons. Teachers can set the context for the joke and help kids understand why the cartoonist has depicted the candidates in the way that he or she did. Another fun activity is to provide kids with photocopies of cartoons with the captions removed. The students can then be asked to create their own captions and present them to the class.
The economy is a never-ending fount of inspiration for political cartoonists. Teachers or moms and dads can help kids look for cartoons that satirize current economic affairs. Local artists may create cartoons about the issues facing the students' own city or town. Sometimes these cartoons can be found in local daily and weekly newspapers. Parents and teachers can challenge kids to find the funniest cartoons on a particular topic, such as the Fiscal Cliff. Kids can try their hand at drawing their own Fiscal Cliffs or variations on other political cartoons. Then they can swap them with their friends and write captions for them.
Teachers can find entire lesson plans themed around political cartoons by visiting editorial cartoon association websites. Using these themed lessons can provide a welcome break from textbook learning and get kids interested in the world around them. They make a nice complement to Weekly Reader and other student newspaper lessons.
While political cartoons make good tools for teaching current events, they are also useful for teaching history lessons. Teachers can find many reproductions of old political cartoons online to teach kids about presidents, wars, the Civil Rights Movement and more. An interesting activity that teachers can initiate is to have students compare the artistic styles used in old cartoons to that of artists today. Many of the old cartoons are very ornately drawn; which is one characteristic of their time.
Political cartoons have been around for centuries; even before the time of the American Revolution. While kids may not understand all of the innuendo contained in political satire, they will enjoy the funny drawings and often be able to appreciate many of the jokes. Kids today are inundated with messages from TV and computers. Political cartoons (many of which exist in a single frame) can at first appear simplistic compared to the media kids are used to. They often contain more than wit, and are excellent sources of commentary about our times.
