Are you stressed out about flying with children?
Is the enthusiasm of a vacation being overshadowed by the worry of getting through the long flight with the little ones?
Not sure what to bring on the flight to keep the little ones amused?
We're on our way to Hawaii with our kids, aged 4 and 6 and I'm in the swing of packing for the trip. BUT we have to somehow amuse the kids for almost 14 hours. Ugh!
Read on as I share some "Flying with Children" ideas with you!
Flying With Children-- the realities first
First and foremost, lets get the monotonous details out of the way.
When flying with children, the first thing every parent should do is check the airline website for details on flying with children.
We'll be flying with Air Canada and some of the info that they share with you on the website with regards to flying with children are as follows:
an infant must be at least 7 days old to be able to take flight (you must be crazy wanting to fly with a baby under 7 days old in my mind !!)
there must be at least 1 individual over 16 for every child under 2-- therefore, if you have 6 month old triplets and it's only you and your husband flying-- you 'd better choose a different plan. Maybe you can afford to bring a teenage cousin on the flight with you
children under 2 in most cases can either fly on their guardians lap or safely and securely fastened in a recognized child restraint (i.e. carseat) that you brought with you. In the last mentioned, you will, of course, have to purchase an additional seat. Make sure you inspect the actual 'child restraint policy' for your airline as what they consider satisfactory might differ from what you think is okay
youngsters over 2 must travel in their own seats. A child restrain device is optional
in Canada, for travel outside the country, everyone, including kids, must have their own valid passport
a birth certificate may also be called for
What? A birth certificate as well as a passport? Good thing I read that-- that is NOT something I had put aside!
One other detail to think about is if you are flying with your child on your own, you will most likely need a spousal authorization letter if the other parent is not going as well.
Ok. So that's the major stuff out of the way. How about actually flying with children - what we're really concerned with. HOW DO WE MANAGE TO KEEP THEM CAPTIVATED?
Flying With Children-- A long day ahead of us
So as I said earlier-- we've got a VERY long day of flying ... our airplane leaves at 8 am. We don't get to Maui until 6:30 pm their time-- that's 9:30 pm our time.
We had a direct flight from Calgary to Maui booked, but a month ago Air Canada decided to cancel it. Thanks Air Canada. Now we have a 4 1/2 hour lay over in L.A. So, what to do with the kids?
How will we preserve our sanity ?!
Flying With Children-- keep them entertained
I'll run through an inventory of things to bring and do throughout the flight to entertain the youngsters.
Just remember-- kids have very short attention spans, especially when all you want to do is relax! Only anticipate each of the following to occupy them for 10-- 20 minutes at a time. Then move on to something new (that's my kids anyway). Also, keep the stuff you have a secret-- it will all be much more exciting if you pull out each activity/toy one by one.
Watch the inflight entertainment. Not all aircrafts may have as fantastic a variety, but I was impressed a few years ago at all the kids channels and kids games they had provided on our flight to New Zealand. Every single seat had their own device.
Held held video game: iPads, DS, Playstations, iPhones. Depending on the age of the children, computer games are always an excellent way to squander some time. iPads are good with children of nearly all ages. Even babies are entertained by them
Books: Getting old fashioned-- little ones of all ages love to be read to or, if more mature, read themselves
Sticker books, coloring books, paper and crayons will keep the youngsters going for a while. And, all of these is usually quite light weight!
Toys such as magnetic faces
Wicky Sticks-- the flexible, stickable wax covered twine will give them many hours of pleasure (well, maybe 1/2 hour of entertainment ?!)
Simply check out the window of the jet with your youngsters and point out things you see
As you can see, there are many, many things that you can do to captivate the kids on the flight. Who knows, after 8 hours of flying, they may even sleep! Wouldn't that be great!
Well, I'm off to gather a few more trinkets and sticker books for the kids. Then I have to wrap up packing. Until next time, I do have a handful of closing thoughts for you ...
Flying With Children-- Final thoughts
When flying with children always be prepared for the unexpected. Always take a minimum of one change of clothes for each of your little ones on the flight. If you have the room, take change of clothes for you too.
A few years ago we were flying to Hawaii with my little princess who was 10 months. She had a really bad tummy bug. We flew Calgary to Vancouver to Hawaii. Before we even left the Vancouver airport she 'd been through 3 changes of clothes. Boy I rejoiced I 'd brought them ...
Also, don't forget the perks of flying with children-- you get to board the plane first. This means you will almost certainly find room for your carry on things in the overhead bins. Who could ask for more?
Above all, don't worry about it-- at least you are going on vacation. What can be better than some sun in paradise?
Bon Voyage!
