Honua Kai Resort and Spa Squidoo

We have been coming back to to Maui now for almost 20 years and made a decision to give a different resort, the Honua Kai Resort, a crack. We did some examination and made a reservation for our 2BR Ocean view apartment from the highly skilled Maui Resort Realty company (more regarding them later).

Frankly, our original impression of Honua Kai Resort was not the very best: we were not very knowledgeable about the hotel's North Kaanapali beach location and when we drove up to the porte cochere outside the lobby, I felt underwhelmed by the relatively nondescript hotel access and bordering scenery. We were quickly welcomed by the management representative and entered the lobby for introduction of the . Upon entering the resort my trepidation dissolved; the lobby area and were a few of the most aesthetically pleasing hotel focus points I had seen in the course of my years going over to Hawaii.

With a feeling of expectancy we followed the agent up to our villa. The accommodation was up-to-date yet kept a very Hawaiian feel and I could not find any kind of flaw. The viewpoints were impressive; the sea off in the distance with the swimming pool areas in the forefront. The young man showed us around the accommodation and did a excellent job making us feel more comfortable, having us know to contact him at any time if we required assistance.

I recall reading somewhere that the name Honua Kai is Hawaiian for Land and Ocean; after taking a saunter on this large, coastline front estate (38 acres) I felt that the resort's label was sensibly decided on. Large swaths of green yard, knolls and beach front provided a feeling of openness to the resort rare in lots of typical Hawaiian beachfront hotels

Facilities:

I will mainly focus on which components of the property my family had fun with the most:

Mom appreciated the several fitness facilities found in both the Konea and Hokulani towers. She liked having her morning workout session prior to beginning the day.
I enjoyed extensive pool features, which probably covered at least 3 or 4 acres sandwiched by the coastline and resort. I enjoyed alternating in between going swimming and body boarding in the sea, showering off and taking a dip in the pool or relaxing in the hot tub.
The kids really enjoyed purchasing goodies from the Aina market place, pool areas, water slides and, of course, being able to mingle with additional kids their ages (we went at the time of Spring Break).

A couple of additional perceptions:

The Honua Kai Hotel property has everything for every person and IMHO was a absolutely wonderful holiday trip.

There is a remarkable strolling path in front of Honua Kai Hotel that takes you to the popular Blackrock point in front of the Sheraton hotel and back past the Royal Lahaina resort as well as Westin Kaanapali Ocean resort. I really took pleasure in the opportunity to experience the North side of Black rock; while a little bit quieter, it was in many ways a even more magnificent setting at that point the South Kaanapali beachfront area. Snorkeling is fantastic in front of the resort-- however, be careful, I would suggest joining the water 75 yards to the south of the resort to stay clear of the coral.

Pros and Cons:

Pros

Family friendly
Villas are recently built as well as beautifully designated
Attractive grounds, swimming pool areas and relaxed setting
Management company was very responsive relating to the few concerns we had in the suite (some appliance quick fix problems)
Friendly staff

Cons

Market was great but costly for what they provided
The area behind hotel is not that attractive-- the hotel is across the street from a business facility (although can't complain regarding the views of West Maui Mountains)
I would have liked to see the day spa open-- the Honua Kai resort and spa is the official title and supposedly it will open in the near future.

Overall impression:

Despite a few slight detracting concerns, the Honua Kai Resort challenges the Marriott's Maui Ocean club for very best resort amenities, and accommodations are in a class by themselves.
I would highly suggest working with Mauiresortrealty.com for booking the Honua Kai-- their rates are much better than the ones offered directly from the resort and their service was outstanding from starting to finish.
