Honua Kai Resort and Spa

We have been returning to Maui now for the better part of 20 years and elected to give a different resort, the Honua Kai Resort, a go. We did some examination and reserved our 2BR Ocean view villa via the particularly dependable Maui Resort Realty group (more about them later on).

Honestly, our lead off impression of Honua Kai Resort was not the best: we were not very familiar with the resort's North Kaanapali beach front region and when we pulled up to the porte cochere outside the lobby, I felt underwhelmed by the more or less uninspiring resort entrance and bordering scenery. We were quickly welcomed by the management company representative and came into the lobby for quick review of the property. Upon entering the hotel my apprehension dissolved; the lobby area and courtyard were some of the most visually pleasing resort focus points I had actually seen during my years visiting Hawaii.

With a sense of expectancy we followed the rep up to our accommodation. The suite was contemporary but kept a particularly Hawaiian feel and I could not discover any kind of fault. The viewpoints were excellent; the ocean off in the distance with the pool areas in the forefront. The young man showed us around the suite and did a great job making us feel more comfortable, letting us know to contact him at any time if we required assistance.

I recall reading someplace that the name Honua Kai is Hawaiian for Land and Ocean; after taking a stroll on this huge, beach front property (38 acres) I observed that the resort's title was sensibly selected. Sizeable belts of green yard, knolls and beach front lent a feeling of openness to the resort area uncommon in lots of traditional Hawaiian beachfront resorts

Facilities:

I will mainly concentrate on which components of the property my family took pleasure in the most:

Mom valued the multiple physical fitness facilities located in both the Konea and Hokulani towers. She appreciated getting her morning workout session before beginning the day.
I enjoyed large swimming pool attributes, which most likely encompassed a minimum of 3 or 4 acres sandwiched by the coastline and resort. I loved alternating between swimming and body boarding in the ocean, showering off and taking a dip in the swimming pool or unwinding in the Jacuzzi tub.
The kids really enjoyed purchasing goodies from the Aina market place, pool spots, water slides and, of course, being able to mingle with additional kids their ages (we went at the time of Spring Break).

A couple of additional insights:

The Honua Kai Hotel property has everything for every person and IMHO was a really great holiday trip.

There is a terrific walking path in front of Honua Kai Resort that takes you to the widely known Blackrock point in front of the Sheraton hotel and back past the Royal Lahaina resort and Westin Kaanapali Sea resort. I actually appreciated the possibility to experience the North side of Black rock; while a bit quieter, it was in many ways a more magnificent setting at that point the South Kaanapali beachfront location. Snorkeling is fantastic in front of the resort-- but, be careful, I would recommend entering the water 75 yards to the south of the resort to stay clear of the coral.

Pros and Cons:

Pros

Family friendly
Villas are newly constructed and also beautifully appointed
Attractive grounds, swimming pool areas as well as relaxed setting
Management company was really responsive regarding the few problems we had in the villa (some appliance quick fix problems)
Friendly staff

Cons

Market was terrific but costly for what they offered
The area behind hotel is not that attractive-- the hotel is across the street from a business facility (although can't complain about the vistas of West Maui Mountains)
I would have liked to see the day spa open-- the Honua Kai resort and spa is the recognized title and supposedly it will open up in the near future.

Overall impression:

Despite a couple of small detracting issues, the Honua Kai Resort challenges the Marriott's Maui Ocean club for very best hotel features, and rooms are in a class by themselves.
I would highly recommend working with Mauiresortrealty.com for making a reservation for the Honua Kai-- their rates are much better than the ones offered directly from the resort and their service was exceptional from starting to finish.
