Use words that are more specific to your site and not too general. For example: if you are promoting cosmetics, your keyword shouldn't be cosmetics. Make sure they are relevant and exact to what you are trying to say in your content body. Remember that most searches for keyword contain 3 words or more, so focus on three or more word phrases.
Keyword Research: the best way to research your keywords is by using a keyword too such as Google keyword tool, or a paid keyword search tool such as Market Samurai. If you Google either one of these you will find them in the search results. Google will give you the monthly searches and the competition. Market Samurai will give you pretty much all the information you will need on a particular keyword. So the point is to find a keyword with a good amount of searches but a low amount of competition. If your keywords have low competition then it should be a good keyword for you to work with.
Using That Keyword: Once you find a good keyword, you then need to use it properly. First you should have that keyword in your URL. Some search engines, especially Google look highly on sites with the searched keyword or keywords in their URL. You should use it in your header tags, title tags, keyword tags, and the body of your content. Don't over use keywords though, 2 to 3 keywords in your tags are enough and make sure the keywords you use are also used in your text body. In the first 100 words you should use about 2 to 3 keywords and another 2 to 3 in the rest of the content body. Remember, don't over use keywords, search engines could see this as spamming. Make sure your content body is firstly written for the reader and secondly for the search engines. The content should make sense. With all the changes in search engine indexing, too many keywords can hurt your sites standings.
