It seems natural for couples counselling to have been around since time immemorial. After all, marriage has been around for centuries; and had our forefathers not partnered together, we wouldn't have been born.
The truth is marriage counselling is a 20th century phenomena. It only started in the 1920s in Germany. It was studied under Eugenics, which is a social philosophy on improving the human race through the promotion of a select set of traits for reproduction. Here, it was used in the Nazi campaign of racial purification. This seems odd to hear now when couples therapists are often there for the survival of the relationship, not the promotion of anything else.
In the United States, marriage counsellingbegan in the 1930s, in the form that somehow mirrored how we know counsellingtoday. This was done in counselling centers and was partly in response to Germany's racially fueled goals. Of course, there were still marked differences to the current trends in couples counselling.
It was promoted in the United States by eugenicists, still, not couples therapists. These were Robert Latou Dickinson and Pall Popenoe. Others who later joined in were Abraham and Hanna Stone, Lena Levine, and Margaret Sanger. The Stones were proponents of Planned Parenthood, not couples therapists.
It was only in the 1950s that psychological issues within the marriage were focused on by couples therapists. This transformed into what we now know as couples counselling. It became a professional service that offered discrete treatment and guidance through relationship issues. Thus, it could be said that it was only later in the 20th century that a trained marriage therapist took over doing this task, which used to be presided on by religious leaders, friends and family.
Before a trained marriage therapist took over, there was really no focus on specific psychological situations and needs of couples. In the past, it was done by counselors, psychiatrists and social workers. These professionals do not necessarily have the training to address individual psychological problems within the framework of being in a relationship. A marriage therapist was then the more specialized professional for such a task.
This trend spread globally as western practices were quickly adopted by other countries. This also reflected the shift of focus from community to the smaller family unit. The therapist worked to save family units that are at risk. This trend is even recognized by several governments that specialized teams within government agencies are trained just to assist the psychological needs of families. Other venues include schools, corporations and family-centered non-government organizations.
Corporations have a particular interest in this. With global industrialization, most of a person's day is spent in the office. Keeping the peace at home can guarantee a productive time in the office.
Most therapists today acquire specialized certification first before they can practice the profession. Some governments even ask them to register their services first. In any case, marriage counselling has indeed come a long way. It has established itself as a smart option for couples who want to save their relationship.
